Jiading was once celebrated as the "Town of Enlightenment" for its educational and cultural heritage. Its legacy emphasized shaping moral character through the environment, fostering generations of scholars and talent. However, rapid urbanization and lack of open space in recent years has diminished its influence and threatened its cultural identity. Sasaki’s master plan for Jiading’s Green Ring reimagines the 70 km2 area around its urban core by revitalizing its ecological framework and enhancing environmental experiences. Rooted in sustainability, it celebrates Jiading’s legacy as the “Town of Enlightenment” by introducing comprehensive green infrastructure and a network of ecologically sound, economically vibrant, and culturally rich public spaces that bridge the past and future.

Respond to the Complex Environment A home for many wildlife species and a key component of the regional eco-network, Green Ring’s improved environmental value, including a near-nature forest, naturalized canal network, and continuous eco-corridors will greatly help elevate the overall value of the regional eco-system. Realign with Public Demand Jiading witnesses a substantial population growth in the past and coming decades, posing a growing demand for public destinations and recreational spaces. Vast open spaces and potential for promoting a low-carbon lifestyle at the Green Ring make it a perfect match to meet such demand. Reimagine the Cultural Identity The plan integrates historical relics into a recreational itinerary, blending natural experiences with local culture in a unique journey.
Improve Habitat Values
Manage Stormwater
Reduce Carbon Footprint
The project’s sustainable initiatives earned it the IFLA ASIA-PAC Award.
The Green Ring transforms 70 km² of groves, fields, canals, and manufacturing sites into an ecologically sound, economically robust, and culturally rich infrastructure, integrating sustainability with Jiading’s cultural identity as the “Town of Enlightenment.”
Rebuild a Robust Environment
The plan proposes thinning and supplementing existing groves to establish healthy forests, while naturalizing canals to restore riparian habitats and improve water quality. By restoring the canal corridor and creating wildlife underpasses and overpasses, the plan optimizes the continuity of the local eco-network.
Reinvigorate a Carbon-Efficient Circular Economy
The plan supports an environmentally and economically sustainable lifestyle as a modern form of enlightenment, featuring a carbon-efficient circular economy that integrates organic farming, waste recycling, biomass energy, and food supply.
Abandoned industrial sites are regenerated by innovatively recycling construction waste to reduce carbon emissions and construction costs. A proposed eco-village showcases the use of clean and reusable energy.
Reshape the Local Identity
With its expansive reach, the Green Ring provides spaces that cater to recreational and cultural needs.
A themed recreational route threads scattered historical relics, industrial land reclamation, agricultural practices, and low-carbon hotspots together, blending natural experiences with glimpses of local culture while fostering a deeper appreciation for Jiading’s heritage.
