MGM Shenzhen, transforming a hotel hotel into a living narrative of memory and environment

The inspiration sprang from the notion that time is a cycle of memories, with places holding the echoes of past moments. Shenzhen MGM Hotel, rebuilt on the former Xiao Meisha Hotel site, embraces this philosophy by preserving the original trapezoidal structure as a foundation for new growth. The concept evolved into a poetic dialogue between architecture and nature—mountains, sea, clouds, and time itself—manifesting in undulating curves and fluid space that mirror ocean waves and shifting skies. This design journey sought to transform a conventional hotel into a living narrative of memory and environment, where light, shadow, and form continuously interplay to evoke emotion and timelessness.

The project exists as a harmonious extension of the Xiao Meisha coastal landscape, creating an intimate dialogue between built form and natural elements. The curved architectural lines echo the ocean’s rolling waves, seamlessly bridging the hotel with the shore’s rhythm. Bathed in sunlight and shifting hues, the space responds dynamically to its environment, aligning the ebb and flow of nature with human experience. In the urban context, the hotel revitalizes the site with cultural resonance—infusing Guangdong’s vernacular traditions like the Hakka “Wei Long” house motifs—while promoting a tranquil refuge from city bustle. This fusion cultivates a place where the landscape’s spirit and urban vitality coalesce in serene sophistication.

Shenzhen MGM Hotel stands as an elegant synthesis of memory, nature, and culture. Retaining the original trapezoidal form, the new design emerges organically like a living organism grown from its predecessor. Its strongest trait lies in the seamless integration of fluid, curvilinear architecture that evokes ocean waves and drifting clouds, creating a dynamic, immersive environment. The design employs natural light and changing color palettes—pearl white, starry blue, and luminous purple—to foster a poetic spatial experience blending reality and dreamscape. Functionally, the use of curved surfaces overcomes structural constraints, enhancing flow and visual harmony. Cultural identity infuses every detail: from the Hakka heritage-inspired “Wei Long” house layers and bamboo textures, to the reverence for nature expressed through art work “Rebirth–Carp” sculpture. The spaces range from the intimate, segmented lobby bar zones to the yacht-inspired executive lounge, offering both privacy and openness. The project’s defining feature is its fluid storytelling through architecture, crafting a timeless sanctuary where nature, memory, and culture elegantly converge.

Lounge Bar
We envisioned a hotel that not only welcomes guests but also tells a story—of place, time, and heritage. Our goal was to create a space where architecture and nature breathe together, offering a serene escape from urban life. This project embodies a living, evolving memory—a sanctuary of tranquility and inspiration that resonates deeply with each visitor.
