For designers, creating inclusive spaces means designing flexible, multi-purpose environments that accommodate diverse needs. The TOCCO hardware collection offers a thoughtful range of hardware choices—often seen as simple accessories but representing the first point of contact to access a space. TOCCO is the first hardware line made of 316L stainless steel and ECONYL®, a 100% regenerated nylon from waste. It features sustainable, interchangeable, and sensory-sensitive levers and pulls, with infinite color options and two handle grip styles—smooth or textured—to suit various tactile and visual preferences. The grip of the TOCCO Collection is made of ECONYL® nylon, a soft material with a temperature similar to that of the environment—pleasant to touch, not hard or cold.

All aspects of a space—color, lighting, texture, elements in the field of view, and sensory stimuli—need to be designed with purpose. It is essential to create environments that offer an ecosystem of options and choices for neurodiverse individuals, allowing them to choose the right setting. TOCCO was designed specifically to provide users with options in color (visual stimulation) and texture (tactile stimulation) of the handles to better suit their preferences and needs. TOCCO is the perfect affordance to avoid sensory overwhelm, offering benefits for all users. The choice of a “common” design and standard fixing is a deliberate decision to promote the use of TOCCO in renovation projects, enabling small—but for some, fundamental—adjustments to the space.
The TOCCO Collection grip is made from ECONYL® — 100% regenerated nylon sourced from waste such as fishing nets, old carpets destined for landfills, plastic components and fabric scraps from mills. In addition to addressing waste, ECONYL® regenerated nylon also has a lower impact on climate change. The TOCCO Collection is designed for easy disassembly, making it simple to recycle its different components at the end of life. It holds an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), contributes to meeting LEED requirements and is Declare Red List Free —supporting the path to a sustainable future. TOCCO won the 2024 Best of NeoCon Gold and the Innovation Award, the 2024 Green Good Design Sustainability Award, and was named a 2024 Interior Design magazine NYCxDESIGN Awards Honoree.
The TOCCO Collection project represents a commitment to inclusion and neuro-inclusion through truly responsible and sustainable practices. We chose ECONYL® regenerated nylon for our products as we support the mission of giving waste a new life. Inclusiveness is experienced as a goal, not as a mean; that is why we carefully choose not only the products we believe in, but also the people we work with and the companies with whom we create value, both in Italy and internationally. Together, we follow a shared path toward the future we aspire to build. Inclusiveness is for everyone; it does not define a specific skill, nor does it seek solutions that flatten diverse needs into a notion of “common necessity.” Instead, it celebrates the beauty, variety, and uniqueness of individuals. Only universal values can support such a vision: Inclusiveness, Beauty for all, Responsibility in every choice—what we do, with whom, and how—and Sustainability. We cannot claim to design “for all” without being sustainable; that’s why the TOCCO Collection brings together people and purpose. Committed to both environmental preservation and inclusiveness – indeed, sustainability cannot disregard the centrality of the individual- we invest in energy-saving projects and promote sustainable, inclusive practices across the design industry.
The door lever is the first touch a person experiences with a built environment. We embrace a more human approach that defies expectation, evoking a welcoming sense of wonder. The feeling experienced through the grip is an important element that conveys comfort and safety to the user. All we know about designing for inclusion and sustainability should extend to every element of the built environment…include door hardware. No detail is too small; each one contributes to the overall experience.
