The site’s original topography consists of a gentle slope descending from south to north, conflicting with the need for ample sunlight due to the harsh climate. To address this, a platform slightly higher than the surrounding highest points was created to ensure optimal conditions. Additionally, the inclusion of two levels of underground parking brings the site closer to a balanced cut-and-fill ratio, reducing carbon emissions. The buildable area of the site is approximately 460m by 235m to 305m, divided into three zones: West, Central, and East. These zones are interconnected by internal green spaces and pedestrian pathways. The buildings arranged along the east-west axis between the zones are offset, creating a dynamic relationship with varied alignments.

West Entrance at Dusk

The platform created on the site is aligned with the southern main entrance and the pedestrian plaza leading to the Juyue Commercial Street, forming a smooth connection. On the southwest to northwest side, the elevation difference ranges from 0.7m to 11.2m, while on the southeast to northeast side, it rises from 0 to 11.5m. To mitigate the height difference on the northern side, a two-level, winding boundary platform is introduced. The secondary main entrance is located on the west side, where the landscape waterfall staircase and accessible ramp seamlessly bridge the height difference. On the east side, an elevator provides access to the municipal road’s pedestrian sidewalk, allowing direct access to the nearby supermarket and commercial street on the southeast.

The residential buildings gradually rise from six to eight stories from south to north, optimizing sunlight exposure. All exterior walls are insulated and feature a controlled window-to-wall ratio—55% on the south side and 35% on the north—to reduce energy consumption. High-performance aluminum-clad wood windows with triple glazing further enhance thermal insulation. The sloped roof design improves drainage efficiency and prevents leakage, while a double-layer concrete slab within the roof enhances thermal performance. The underground parking is positioned directly beneath each building, minimizing large-scale excavation and preserving soil conditions, allowing for the growth of tall trees and fostering a symbiotic relationship with nature.

The building façades feature south-facing glass-railed balconies with subtle reflectivity—an uncommon design in the region due to the lack of shading. The elevated balcony flooring seamlessly extends from the interior, creating a semi-outdoor living space. Combined with the low-rise architecture and lush tree canopy, this design fosters a close connection between residents and the surrounding garden landscape. Additionally, the staggered balcony layers enrich the façade, compensating for the lack of horizontal eaves or vertical wing walls, which are typically impractical in the cold climate. The solid exterior walls are clad in natural matte limestone using a dry-hanging technique. The material’s inherent dimensional constraints, along with carefully designed deep and shallow joint patterns, create a warm and refined aesthetic—subtle yet sophisticated, exuding an understated elegance. The southern main entrance is framed beneath a 10-meter-wide horizontal canopy, seamlessly transitioning from the adjacent landscape axis to an urban-scale space. Meanwhile, the western main entrance serves as a hidden garden portal—an ascent through lush greenery that transforms the journey home into a tranquil and meditative experience.
