The idea for the project emerged from the unique character of its location—a tranquil residential area near Nakano, renowned for its vibrant subcultures and proximity to Heiwanomori Park. The concept was developed to harmonize with both the energetic urban context and the serene natural surroundings. The slender plot, a typical feature in Tokyo, inspired a design that skillfully balances legal constraints with spatial creativity. The use of concrete, galvanized panels, and minimalist interiors reflects a desire to create a dignified yet invigorating retreat, seamlessly integrating city life and nature while maximizing functionality and light.

TWILIGHT EXTERIOR

The project establishes a dynamic dialogue with its urban and natural context. Situated in a tranquil residential area near vibrant Nakano and adjacent to Heiwanomori Park, the residence balances urban energy and natural serenity. Its slender form reflects Tokyo’s typical land constraints, while the rhythmic concrete façade and galvanized panels echo the sky and surrounding textures. Generous openings connect interiors to city views, and flexible spaces adapt to diverse lifestyles. The design harmonizes with legal regulations and local character, creating a refined sanctuary that both respects and enhances its landscape.

TWILIGHT SURROUNDINGS

Sustainability and eco-compatibility were central to this project’s design. The building employs reinforced concrete and hot-dip galvanized panels for longevity and low maintenance, while cedar-plank formwork uses responsibly sourced timber. The residence is designed for three-sided cross-ventilation and ample natural lighting, with square openings and expansive windows on three facades to maximize airflow and daylight, reducing energy needs. Minimalist interiors and efficient spatial planning minimize material use and waste. The ground floor’s flexible layout supports adaptive reuse. While no formal awards or certifications have yet been obtained, the project exemplifies sustainable urban living in Tokyo’s dense context.

CONCRETE DETAIL

This project is a residential building in western Tokyo, harmonizing with its tranquil neighborhood while embracing the vibrant subculture of nearby Nakano. Built on a slender plot typical of Tokyo, it skillfully navigates strict legal constraints, featuring reinforced concrete walls with rhythmic square openings, galvanized panels, and cedar-plank formwork. The ground floor flexibly serves as both a garage and a hobby space. Minimalist interiors in white and concrete create a sense of purity, while expansive openings connect the home to its urban surroundings. The top floor’s large window floods the space with light, supporting remote work and offering panoramic views. This residence exemplifies spatial efficiency, resilience, and refined simplicity, elevating everyday living through thoughtful design.

STAIR CASE
