The project by DFA Partners stems from a strong idea of spatial control, aiming to meet the standards of contemporary living, with large spaces inspired by classical design and a concept of beauty rooted in traditional principles. These elements engage in a dynamic dialogue with the existing building, generating a vibrant, harmonious exchange in tune with the urban context. This dialogue forms the very foundation of the concept.

Ausonio integrates harmoniously within Milan’s urban fabric, situated between the Navigli and Sant’Ambrogio districts—an area steeped in history, craftsmanship, and ongoing contemporary evolution. The project respects the original building’s alignments, volumes, and rationalist architectural language, reinterpreting them with a contemporary sensitivity. The extensive greenery—from planted terraces to the sunken internal garden—creates a dialogue with the city, introducing a refined, intimate natural dimension within one of Milan’s most vibrant neighborhoods.
The Ausonio project places environmental sustainability at its core, adopting advanced technologies for energy saving (Class A), including photovoltaic panels and low-temperature heating to reduce consumption. Eco-friendly materials, produced with respect for the environment, have been carefully selected. The relationship with greenery is strategic: each unit features a private green space, while the communal courtyard creates a balance between privacy and social interaction, blending indoor and outdoor areas.
The Ausonio project stems from the desire to restore value to a 1950s–60s residential building — seemingly anonymous, yet rich in history. During the renovation works, unexpected traces of an even older structure emerged: solid brick walls, remnants of a pre-war building that had been incorporated into the post-war reconstruction. The new steel structure now enters into dialogue with the reinforced concrete and hollow bricks of the 1960s.
This historical layering has guided the design concept: transforming a fragmented building into a unified, contemporary architectural organism.
A key element of the intervention is greenery, conceived as a natural infrastructure that enhances quality of life. The project includes a sunken internal garden, planted terraces, and shared spaces — such as a gym and a book club — that promote wellbeing, social interaction, and a connection with nature.
Ausonio is not merely a renovation project, but an act of urban regeneration that acknowledges and enhances historical memory, projecting it toward a sustainable and conscious future.
Ausonio transforms a forgotten urban fragment into contemporary architecture that engages with history while looking to the future. The project combines regeneration, quality living, and sustainability, restoring meaning and identity to a place in the heart of Milan.
