To comply with ESCP standards, the surface area was expanded with a new volume in the courtyard, intended for large classrooms and conference rooms. In the historic building, on the other hand, there are smaller classrooms, offices, and study spaces, creating a compact urban vertical campus that is integrated and efficient in managing flows and energy, combining historic charm with modern flexibility.

The overlapping bands curved following the Turin exceptions - from Guarini to Mollino.

The project places the new glass entrance on via Doria, creating an ESCP urban plaza, a space for exchange between the school and the city. A pathway connects this plaza to via Cavour and Piazza Valdo Fusi, making the building permeable. The covered plaza, open to the public, hosts services on the ground floor such as a learning center and a cafeteria with a terrace, accessible from outside for 24/7 use. In this way, the school engages with the city, animating the public space and providing a venue for events and gatherings.

The new entrance to the building.

The new public square is a place of exchange between school and the city.

  1. Reuse of a historic building owned by BNL in Turin for the ESCP campus, hosting 1,500 international students.

  2. Insertion of a new contemporary volume in the courtyard, housing large classrooms and modern spaces, integrated with the historic building.

  3. Promotion of the university vocation of the historic center, enhancing urban animation and safety with 24/7 services.

  4. Environmental sustainability with building envelope upgrades, use of recycled materials, photovoltaic panels, LED lighting, and advanced energy management.

  5. Accessible public spaces: new covered square open to all citizens, connected to the city.

  6. Functional internal organization with large and small classrooms, offices, study spaces, and parking for bikes and electric cars.

The learning center is an innovative space for study and research.
The restoration and transformation project of a historic building owned by BNL BNP Paribas, which carried out the work for ESCP, represents an excellent example of integration between past and future, architecture and education, city and institution.

Bio

TRA is an Italo-Belgian architecture and engineering firm founded in 2011 by Isabelle Toussaint and Matteo Robiglio, specializing in the adaptive reuse of existing built heritage, from buildings to urban areas. Their approach integrates conservation and transformation, aiming for a sustainable future for disused sites. Robiglio, a professor at Politecnico di Torino, and Toussaint, a conservator trained at RLICC KU Leuven, lead a practice combining research, teaching, and design. TRA works on historic buildings, post-industrial sites, and 20th-century residential complexes, focusing on community involvement, climate adaptation, and high environmental quality. Their method starts from careful reading of the existing to redefine its use and urban identity. TRA has published works such as REUSA (Berlin 2017) and Past to Future (Brussels 2022), and carries out numerous projects that fuse old and new in an innovative, sustainable way.
