The project aims to enhance the l’Ex Caserma Capitano De Cristoforis in Como, returning it to the city through a conservative restoration and functional reorganization. The concept was developed collaboratively between the working group and local administrations, with regular meetings to ensure that architectural, environmental, and functional needs were met. A key element of the project is the redevelopment of the central square, which will become the heart of the complex, creating a connection between the buildings and the urban context. The architectural restoration aims to preserve the building’s historical identity while discreetly incorporating modern functionalities with innovative and sustainable solutions.

The redevelopment project integrates harmoniously with the surrounding landscape, respecting the history, culture, and urban environment. It establishes a smooth connection between the monumental complex and the urban fabric of Como through the revitalization of the central square, which will serve as a public gathering space. The former barracks will house various administrative offices, providing an opportunity to add value to the square and its surrounding areas. The outdoor area, designed as a multifunctional urban park, includes green spaces, pedestrian pathways, and event areas. The preservation and enhancement of the existing lime tree rows reinforce the historical identity of the site while improving environmental and landscape quality.

The restoration of the Ex Caserma De Cristoforis was carried out with a strong focus on sustainability, integrating advanced technologies and eco-friendly materials. Energy distribution has been optimized with a strategically placed ENEL substation, reducing energy losses. The photovoltaic system consists of terracotta-colored panels (405 Wp) that preserve the historical aesthetic, alongside monocrystalline panels (670 Wp) for higher efficiency. The generated energy reduces costs and increases the complex’s self-sufficiency. By combining sustainable technologies with respect for historical heritage, the project contributes to a greener and more functional future, addressing tomorrow’s environmental challenges.

The strengths of the project lie in its ability to merge historical preservation with sustainable innovation. Aesthetic harmony across the complex’s various buildings is achieved through targeted interventions on the external façades, ensuring stylistic coherence. This approach preserves the historical identity while creating an integrated architectural ensemble within the urban context. Developed in collaboration with local administrations, the project benefited from clear objectives and consistent implementation. The revitalization of the central square as a dynamic public space fosters social interaction and inclusivity. Additionally, seismic and technical upgrades, including the photovoltaic system, ensure safety and energy efficiency. The use of local materials further reduces the project’s environmental impact. The phases of the project were aligned with administrative needs, adhering to current regulations and ensuring both functionality and sustainability. The design approach prioritizes long-term preservation of architectural heritage while meeting contemporary demands.
