Chengdu Tianfu City Planning Hall, like a wild goose taking flight from the hill

AND Studio

Drawing on the bamboo culture of Sichuan, the building is perched at the top of a hill, as if emerging from the earth, reflecting a search for a balance between architecture, city and nature. The architectural concept is based on the idea of a wild goose taking flight from the south of the hill, spreading its wings amid the greenery of the mountains and forest. This flight echoes the take-off of the creative digital city of Tianfu, and conveys the new paradigm of a park city expressing "a city of natural growth" and "a city of poetic habitation".

In terms of function, this cultural centre represents both a showcase for the city's development and a witness to the construction of this area. This singular positioning, "to see and be seen", guided the entire design right through to the final construction. The building's façade uses a large curtain wall surface of hidden ribbed glass to reflect the Yanqi wetland into the pavilion, and to extend the park scene into the interior, dissolving the boundary between the building and nature.
Elevated colonnades with protective overhangs create sheltered walkways. When viewed from afar, the cantilevered structure appears poised for flight with wing-like eaves; up close, it recedes into the mountainside, framing panoramic mountain views.

Emphasizing sustainable, low-carbon design, the ceiling incorporates locally sourced bamboo - a material deeply symbolic of Sichuan's natural environment - to create innovative bamboo-steel composite grids. These modular elements are precision-engineered using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery techniques, with interlocking bamboo-steel sleepers overlapping in an intricate pattern that enhances both the structural integrity and visual harmony of the timber framework.

Taking advantage of the surrounding hills, we placed the center at the top of a promontory, using the metaphor of a wild goose on the lookout for its surroundings. The roof of the building, whose sides are reminiscent of origami folds, also echoes the wings of a crane taking flight. The transparency of the ground floor reflects the clouds, anchoring the building between sky and earth, city and nature. The building's façade uses a large curtain wall surface of hidden ribbed glass to reflect the Yanqi wetland in the pavilion, and extend the park scene inside, dissolving the boundary between the building and nature. The ground floor of the building takes the form of a raised colonnade, with projecting eaves that allow users to stroll underneath. From a distance, the main body of the building appears to stand 'upright' in an overhanging position, ready to spread its eaves like wings to take flight. But up close, the main body of the building 'retreats' into the mountains, allowing visitors to gaze out over the surrounding mountains. The elevated colonnade creates sheltered walkways beneath cantilevered eaves that appear poised for takeoff when viewed from afar. Up close, the structure recedes into the mountainside, framing panoramic views. Inside, a sunlit atrium filters daylight through bamboo louvers, while sustainable bamboo-steel grids form the ceiling - a nod to Sichuan's regional identity. At dusk, the silhouette resembles a goose feather resting on the mountain, embodying a contemporary interpretation of wilderness harmony.

"Ancient China built 'nests from wood' while the West 'stacked stones into palaces'—structure creates space yet becomes art itself, where mechanics, form, and beauty unite. 'Goose Feather' employs floor-to-ceiling glass to flood the gallery with light. Transparent panes frame ever-changing seasons and light as nature's brushstrokes, creating a 'gallery with views' that merges landscape and culture, echoing Mies van der Rohe's vision. The bamboo-steel structure ingeniously reimagines Sichuan's
