The project idea comes from a series of reflections aimed at understanding the delicate issues of emotional and psychological comfort that the Beauty-Point will have to offer. This is called to welcome two opposing dimensions, 'showing' and 'concealing', living in the fine line that separates them with constant attention to seeking a pleasant and comfortable climate. The hybrid nature of the venue - open on the street side and blind on the rear, located in an area that acts as a hinge between the consolidated antiquity of the historic center and the 20th century expansion districts - inspired and translated the project concept. Shaping 'public' spaces, 'private' spaces and 'hybrid' spaces, always in connection with the physical and emotional presence of the people who use them.
We are in Sansepolcro (AR), a city characterized by a wall circuit built mostly between the 14th and 16th centuries which has remained substantially intact to this day, giving the city an enclosed dimension. The object of the intervention is a venue to be restored, located on the ground floor of a mid-20th century building built on the edge of the historic city, close to one of the corner bastions of the city walls. The character of the place is essential and characterized by two elevations: one open, with large windows facing the street; the other blind, towards the walls.
The project reworks the spatiality and urban location of the place, maintaining the sobriety of the building externally and strongly characterizing the interiors.
The project for the Beauty-Point is a volumetric composition of sensible spaces modeled thanks to a structural element, the steel truss. Protagonist from the first moment you access the space, it does not reveal its supporting nature at first glance but allows itself to be looked at in its strong compositional and figurative connotation. The truss remains suspended, without vertical support elements, giving a sense of lifting to the observer. From structural elements it becomes a scenic one for the main space, the public volume. This is the space with sociable and open character, full height towards the street-side windows, where there are pedicure and manicure stations, waiting area and reception. Below the truss, a wall interrupted by a passage outlines the boundaries of the public volume to enclose the private ones behind it: the cabins and the service areas. A wooden ceiling cover this areas at 2,40 m or 2,70 m height according to regulations, and it rests on Z-shaped steel tubes anchored to the truss. So the mezzanine, the hybrid volume, free from specific functions develops above the rooms at 2.40 m height. The furnishing elements, designed in all details, are divided into layers with an overlap of two different wooden essences that recalls the work of the beautician. The wood above is tulipwood and is intended to represent the layer of the nail polish, of the make up. It reveal the underlying walnut wood, and is intended to represent the natural skin of the person.
We go to the beauty center to better connect with ourselves and others, to socialize with those who are already there or to isolate ourselves in a cabin. It's not so different from going to the physiotherapist or the priest. I wanted my beauty center to highlight both dimensions, the spiritual one and the material one. I am very satisfied: spatiality translates the interior sphere, the layering of materials in furnishings translates the physical sphere and also the profession of the beautician
