The idea for this project originated from the client's vision for a contemporary sculptural villa that would harmonize with the unique landscaping at the foot of the Dolomite Alps. The concept was developed collaboratively with the client, architect designer Luisa Canton, and the local architect in our Milan office. Our goal was to create something unprecedented while paying homage to the glorious tradition of Italian design. The client's desire for a distinctive, modern residence inspired us to blend innovative architectural elements with the natural beauty of the surroundings, resulting in a villa that seamlessly integrates with the landscape while standing out as a work of art.
The isolated villa is immersed in the landscape, with the pinkish hues of the Dolomite Alps providing a stunning backdrop. From the very beginning, the project has been inspired by a profound relationship with the spirit of the place. We deliberately played with contrasts, using a very modern and dynamic mass composition to juxtapose the natural surroundings. This interaction creates a dialogue between the villa and its environment, where contemporary design elements highlight and complement the timeless beauty of the landscape. The result is a harmonious blend of modernity and nature, where each enhances the other.
Interpretation is the key word for our project. We recognize that creating something entirely new in today's world is a challenge, so our aim was to deliver an educated and elegant rendition of the glorious modern tradition of villa designs. To interpret means to draw from a well-curated glossary of design elements and adapt them to present circumstances, such as the client's story, vision, and the spirit of the place (or genius loci, as it is better known).
While functionality, space planning, and maximization of investment were thoroughly researched and implemented, the defining characteristic of this project lies in its classy, elegant, and balanced selection of themes. Our approach to interpreting traditional elements such as the fireplace, staircase, and windows – emphasizing their relationship with natural light and the surrounding landscape – stands out. Similarly, our interpretations of the kitchen and bathroom designs are tailored to our unique sculptural sensibility.
Lighting design plays a crucial role in achieving the desired effect, enhancing the elegance and balance of each space. Every design decision, from the layout to the smallest details, was made with the intention of creating a villa that not only meets modern needs but also resonates with timeless beauty and sophistication. This project showcases our commitment to interpreting traditional themes in a way that feels both fresh and deeply rooted in the heritage of villa design.
The client's family is truly happy in this house. They enjoy the energy, balance, and connection with the natural elements. Beyond the satisfaction of having state-of-the-art domestic features, they love how natural light flows through their rooms at different times of the day. Whenever I visit, I can sense the good vibrations and share in their joyful living. Ultimately, this is what a private residence is all about – creating a space that fosters happiness and well-being.
