International Competition for København New Modern Library
A new model of library 2.0 for Copenhagen

Swans appeared in a Danish fairytale ‘The Ugly Duckling’ written by Hans C. Andersen in 1843. The story is about a baby swan misplaced in a duck nest. He was bullied by other ducks for its ugly look. However, the baby swan endures all the suffering and eventually find its true self at the end. This story has touched hearts of many people from all over the world and it also triggered the changing of the national bird of Denmark to the SWAN
If we take a closer look at it, we can find something in common between this story and the people of Denmark.
Danes attitude of life, Hygge, is ability to find happiness regardless of the surrounding. This intrinsic value indicates they are able to find their true meaning and joy of life through mature cultural backbone.
Thus we can say the Swan from Ugly Duckling well represents the Danish mature attitude toward life.
With the advent of Internet technology, the notion of space has changed. Now, space can contain numerous activities and information in the Internet Space. Thus, the traditional idea of Library as knowledge storage has become meaningless. Furthermore, gaining knowledge is no longer a matter of survival but it is now a matter of increasing and contribute to their civilians’ quality of life. Thus, library space should be filled with activity that is more user bared rather than simply storage for books.
In this Library, a stream of knowledge doesn’t flows in one direction. It’s actively exchanged among ‘Knowledge Community,’ What’s important is not conveying knowledge to users but the joy itself in expressing ideas and sharing among this community. Through this, people pursues joy of playing knowledge. No longer forced to learn but have fun as if they are playing. At the same time, physical collection Room still have its attraction as a space for serendipity in knowledge through exploring bookshelves.
Therefore, this space is not organized in the most efficient way for storing books but it has various form of space with dynamic furniture where they can sit, laydown, and crawl on.
All the basic informational search can be done on the internet and this area will be placed on the ground floor near the entrance so that this area can be separated from other active action based space and can be operated 24 hours.
