Santa Anita Race Track Renovations
By -

The Santa Anita Race Track, built originally in 1934, is undertaking a major renovation and rehabilitation. The owners hired Studio Antares with the brief to design an environment that revitalizes the space bringing a vision for the future of this historic place.
The New Club Suites is one of several projects in the framework of a larger ongoing process that Studio Antares has undertaken with the goal of bringing excitement to the experience at Race Track through innovative and site specific design. It is a comprehensive task encompassing all of the steps from programming to design of the spaces, interiors and details. The 14,000 sq. ft. and 400 ft. long row of suites is located over the former grand stands and under the existing restaurant. Designed as multifunctional spaces, the suites provide various amenities for the patrons and introduce a new program variety to the racing sport. Each suite is a derivative of the same module but is modified by the parameters of the context, sight lines optimization, and the relation to the rest of the track amenities to devise an array of distinctly individualized spaces. The design is addressing the challenges of the existing grand stands structure constrains by conceiving a space with varying floor and ceiling levels that unfolds towards the track. The retractable glass partitions alleviate the separation between exterior and interior areas of the suites. The juxtaposition of traditional and modern materials (leather and profiled metal panel, wood and polymers, painted concrete and glass), which are enriched by a graphic color selection, reminisce the tradition of the place while giving it a contemporary feel. At each suite, a unique photo-mural related to the history of the Race Track provides a contextual backdrop for the event activities while the color-coded saddling mats and numbers on the black & white images correspond to the specific number of the suite. The uniformity of the hallway circulation is periodically broken by the variegated doors of the suites, the gallery of abstracted racing teams’ silks graphics, and the views towards the mountains. The design utilizes the large existing canopy and the northern exposure to supply the spaces with natural ventilation and daylight.
