Deeply anchored in its context, the project provides 34 social housing units and a childcare center
At 27 Rue Bouret, in Paris’s 19th arrondissement, PietriArchitectes has completed a residential complex that addresses the challenges of contemporary housing within a dense, high-occupancy urban setting. Comprising 34 social housing units and a first-floor childcare center, the project balances resident utility, environmental stewardship, and urban integration.

Rue Bouret is characterized by the mixed urban fabric typical of Paris’s outer districts, with 1970s blocks alongside row houses and buildings from different periods. In this fragmented setting, the design team prioritized continuity over contrast, focusing on contextual massing and urban alignment. The first four levels follow the existing street wall to preserve a coherent frontage. From the sixth floor up, the massing steps back progressively, forming a terraced profile reminiscent of ziggurats and French architect and designer Henri Sauvage’s stepped buildings.
More than a formal gesture, this stepped massing is primarily functional. The pyramidal profile reduces shadowing on adjacent structures, optimizes daylighting for the residents, and supports cross-ventilation. The setbacks also create large outdoor areas that form integral extensions of the interior living spaces.
The vertical structure is entirely timber, while the load-bearing stone street frontage gives the building a grounded, timeless presence that reflects Parisian architectural tradition. On the courtyard side, a wood-frame envelope allowed for the prefabrication of components off-site, reducing construction time, noise, and site impact in a sensitive urban setting. Concrete was used only where strictly necessary for structural stability, reflecting a construction approach aimed at reducing the project’s carbon footprint.
This calibrated combination of timber, stone, and concrete supports superior energy performance. Reflecting the firm’s commitment to sustainable design, the project not only meets the City of Paris Climate Plan but exceeds the RT 2012 standard by 20%.
The Rue Bouret project reflects PietriArchitectes’ longstanding focus on urban context and user comfort. The childcare center on the first floor likewise strengthens the building’s role as a neighborhood resource, making it an active part of local community life. This is architecture that addresses social, environmental, and urban needs through a contemporary language firmly anchored in its context.
