Rediscovering the Genius Loci

Beyond Palladian order and the familiar vernacular of the Sicilian countryside, Casa dell’Ulivo reclaims the genius loci of Modica’s hinterland with a fresh, contemporary gaze. Here, architect Antonio Stornello of MAx – Metabolic Architecture Workshop has reimagined and upgraded a private home set amid some greenery and mature trees, its early-20th-century rural structure now sharing the area with newer villas and scattered outbuildings. It was actually this mix of eras and characteristics in the surrounds that ultimately underscored the desire, of both the client and the architect, to elevate the site, rethink the quality of the built environment and create a deeper symbiosis between architecture and nature. The result is Casa dell’Ulivo, which literally means Olive House and is a home deeply anchored in its landscape yet refined with a contemporary touch and design quality.

At first glance, the house subverts expectations as there is no “urban” front facing one way and “agricultural” back facing the other. Instead, the single-story volume, with a clear black-and-white rhythm, avoids traditional hierarchies of main and secondary façades. In their place, a sequence of almost theatrical wings frames the space and sustains a continuous dialogue between indoors and outdoors.

A pivotal element in the project came from Oikos Venezia, a brand renowned for its “entrance architectures”. The firm supplied the Synua Wall System, distinguished by its sculptural, boiserie-like surfaces and a seamless balance of design and performance. At the heart of the system is an oversized Synua pivot security door, installed fully flush inside and out. Fitted with a manual mechanical lock, it blends into the architecture through an exterior Synua Wall System clad in porcelain stoneware. By allowing the door and wall planes to sit perfectly coplanar, the system creates a continuous contemporary boiserie – innovative and striking. A curated color palette, abundant daylight, glazed windows and sliding doors reinforce the connection to the outdoors, visually carrying the home into the landscape. The living area, for example, opens through a glass wall to a compact planted greenhouse, reinforcing the uninterrupted dialogue between indoors and out. Throughout, a play of solids and voids and a balance of earthy, rural hues with crisp, contemporary whites deepen the connection between architecture and nature. To use the architect’s own words, “Embracing the unexpected is essential to redefining the genius loci – the spirit of the place. For the good of the place”.
