Pietà Rondanini Museum

Pietà Rondanini, Michelangelo’s final creation, has a new home in the Pietà Rondanini Museum, which is housed in the so-called Spanish Hospital in Milan’s Sforza Castle. 

The move is part a wider restoration project for the Spanish Hospital guided by Michele De Lucchi. The decision to bring this evocative masterpiece here was very much guided by a desire to find both an optimal location for the piece and to make it accessible to a broader public. 

Located in the centre of the new exhibition space, the Pietà rests on a cylindrical plinth embedded in a special oak platform with anti-vibration (especially to protect the sculpture from the risks created by the underground running below) and anti-seismic systems. 

Mapei was involved with the supply of materials and technologies for laying the floor, starting from the levelling and the smoothing substrates with Ultraplan Maxi, an ultra-fast hardening, self-levelling and smoothing mixture with low VOC content (Emicode EC1 R Plus). 

The wooden floor was subsequently laid with Ultrabond ECO S968 1K, a one-component, solvent and plastic-free silicon polymer adhesive, with low VOC content (Emicode EC1 R Plus). 

This project forms part of a larger one to restore much of Milan’s architectural heritage as part of the regeneration of the city for Expo 2015. Mapei has been involved in this, providing the expertise built up through its years of experience.
