Mulini Beach
By -

Mulini Beach is located in an attractive area of Rovinj, on the exit from the central part of the city and in the continuation of the promenade, in front of hotels Monte Mulini, Lone and Eden, wrapped in a rich green public park and green forest protective areas.
It is an extension of the city’s public area and the promenade whose primary function is to connect the city of Rovinj and park Punta Corrente.
An extremely important factor in the design of the beach was the relationship to existing terrain. With regard to the specific environment that is completely different depending on the time of day (the sea level varies in approximately 80 cm) due to the influence of the tides the design was dependent on the sea as a variable element, the sea has significantly influenced the creative decisions during the design process.
That is why the entire area of the beach is divided into two zones – a stretch from the marina to the beach pavilion that is greatly influenced by the waves, and a much calmer bay with a pebble beach. The first zone is designed as a natural topography, with lots of fractured surfaces for sunbathing and relatively sparse vegetation. The calmer Lone bay is formed as a pebble beach with lush vegetation that gently slopes into the sea.
Mulini Beach Bar, a beach facility with a large bar, locker rooms, showers, toilets and an information desk is located in the center of the zone. In the evening, the beach bar turns into a more intimate lounge with a cozy atmosphere by the sea. It is designed as a pavilion with a floating pergola roof – a steel structure that rests on 6 points, whose final shape was determined by an analysis of the sun movement through the summer months. The pergola, weighing 20 tons, has a span of 30m in length. It is constructed from steel sheets 8mm and 20mm thick, and has a total height of 20cm. The bar can be closed with a sliding wall that is stored inside a storage room during the day. The sliding wall is hung from the pergola construction. The plateau in front of the bar is equipped with infrastructure that allows small concerts and entertainment. Mulini Beach Bar – construction. The base of the Mulini Beach Bar – Pavilion is a reinforced concrete structure, with the height of app. 2,60m. The steel pergola roof is elevated above the reinforced concrete base for 250 - 350mm.
The main role of the pergola is to provide sun protection for the space of the bar underneath it. The optimal functional form (structure) of the pergola, in ground plan and cross section, is the result of the analysis of the sun movement during the three summer months. Further analysis of the bearing structure design options imposed the idea of functional form and supporting structure becoming a single body.
Pergola is a steel grid made up of 330mm wide sheet metal strips. These steel strips intersect at an angle of 45° (when viewed on the floor plan). They are spaced out at 350 to 650mm, and inclined with respect to the vertical plane by 40°. The thickness of the steel strip is 8,0 and 20,0 mm. The constructive height of thusly formed grid is 250mm.
The floor plan dimensions of the pergola are app.36,0m x 6,0m, and it rests on 6 points. In the static sense, the load bearing grid has two fields spanning 13,50m, with 4,50m overhangs. Also, the pergola supports are recessed for app.1,50m in relation to the longer side of the pergola.
These six steel columns between the reinforced concrete base and the steel pergola have a height of 300 to 380mm; they are designed to follow the direction of the steel grid strips, and tapering from top to bottom.
The whole pergola was made by welding all of the steel strips together in a workshop, and was delivered to the construction site in six segments measuring approximately 12,0 x 3,0m. The segments were then connected together by welding on the site.

3LHD is an architectural practice, focused on integrating various disciplines – architecture, urban planning, design and art.
3LHD architects constantly explore new possibilities of interaction between architecture, society and individuals. With contemporary approach, the team resolves all projects in cooperation with many experts from various disciplines. Projects, such as Memorial Bridge, Croatian Pavilion on EXPO 2005, Riva Waterfront, Sports Hall Bale, Zamet Centre, and Hotel Lone are some of the important highlights.
The work of 3LHD has received international and Croatian awards including: best building in Sport category on WAF 2008, IOC/IAKS Bronze Medal Award 2009 and Silver Medal Award 2011 for best architectural achievement of facilities intended for sports and recreation, AR Emerging Architecture Award, the ID Magazine Award; and Croatian professional awards Drago Galić (2013; 2008), Bernando Bernardi (2009; 2005), Viktor Kovačić (2011; 2001), and Vladimir Nazor (2009; 1999).
