The MontLégia Clinic in Liège, designed by Assar Architects, is a 113,000 sq.m hospital complex with 764 beds and an outpatient capacity of 155. The project brief was to unify the activities of three originally separate hospital structures, while keeping the maternity and children’s wards clearly distinct from the other hospital services, but still physically close to the medical and technical facilities. The result is a complex which combines clarity of layout with a compositional harmony created by the arrangement of the distinct sections, the thoughtful placement of the windows and the color choices for the cladding. As the façade needed to combine performance with aesthetics, the designers turned to Neolith® sintered stone in Nero and Arctic White. By creating extensive sections in solid colors, they exploited the dramatic contrast to mimic the different building functions in a robust material that is highly resistant to the elements. For the main ward building, rising six floors, 16,000 sq.m of white cladding was required. This section is characterized by long ribbon windows that, working in tandem with the cladding, accentuate the horizontal flow. The areas housing the medical and technical facilities required 6,000 sq.m of black slabs. In contrast to the main ward cladding, these were placed vertically to highlight the regular geometric placement of the windows on this façade.
