Hunan Changsha Meixi Lake Data Center
By -

Hunan Changsha Meixi Lake Data Center - The project is located in Meixi Lake District, Changsha, Hunan, China facing Meixi Lake Road to the north and Taohua Ridge to the south. The site has mountains on its back and is opened to the river. Although included in a larger development area, this building can be considered the main gate to access to Meixi Urban District which includes Meixi Lake International Culture & Arts Centre.
The architectural design concept starts from a special stone found on the mountain, becoming then a milestone to confirm the relation with the surrounding natural system. The stone, as iconic element, becomes architecture improving its different surfaces, through a contemporary design system, to set up the right relation between function and form. Beside this relation, the stone element is slightly unfolded into a horizontal combination of two main volumes, lying softly on a sloping landscape base to recall its natural origins, in one system with the mountains and Meixi Lake. The main volumes, growing up with elegant rhythm from the mountain’s soil, define an interesting relation with the environment, with long open views and sudden and surprising narrow pictures all along its level plans. Ground floor area with its underground level are set as the main data center functional system, while the upper floors are used as offices and living areas. The building’s main design lines mark the mountain skyline,
edging the architectural facade’s system with materials as stone, glass and stainless steel. The design fully considers the local climate characteristics, meeting the requirements of lighting and ventilation technical standards, while a rainwater collection system is developed along the sloping roof plan, to fulfill the landscape irrigation request.
Landscape design tries to merge softly with the architecture, going from the entrance outdoor space to the inner court atrium at the first level, until the outdoor platform terraces at the upper levels, gradually fading in and leaving a sensation of comfortable spaces.
