Hotel Orion Motobu Resort & Spa Design Concept - Okinawa is an island located the southernmost part of Japan where was combined three deferent Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese culture, and eventually developed as unique and distinguish one. Especially, UGANJU and UTAKI are traditional places of Okinawa, usually located an interface between land and sea where for praying to god in the past from 15 th to 19th centuries.
On the other hand, Okinawa is one of the most typhoon-prone region in Japan. That was the reason why most traditional households had happiness trees (FUKUGI=Garcinia subelliptica) around buildings and streets to protect their houses and village from a sever wind. However, the beautiful village scape with more than 400-year-old trees was almost destroyed during the Second World War except few places such as “BISE”. BISE district in the north part of Okinawa for the hotel site is well known as a place where has long-lived traditions and culture. Although, the hotel site was once developed as amusement park, the forest of UGAJYU has still remained in the middle of the site and the old town scape with happiness trees has maintained around site.
This hotel which can accommodate 500 people has creating harmony with genuine Okinawa’s environment by gradually scale down the hotel volume toward to BISE district and planting new happiness trees between hotel and village.
Iejima island which can be shown through the west side sea of the site has a huge rampart of rock called TATCHU which is not only the biggest eye-stop but also an object for indigenous religion throughout the area. Also, the axis of happiness trees in the BISE district is headed to the TATCHU.
In order to provide an opportunity to feel inherent environment in Okinawa such as natural light, wind, sound, the entrance lobby has designed as outdoor space with open view to the UGANJYU and Iejima island. Moreover, by applying a rock texture as same with UTAKI to the wall in the entrance lobby, the space has been assimilated into the local environment.
This project aim to make attractive space in harmony with natural scenery and religious belief that are still kept up by village during 400 years.
