A Pilot project with a fibre, pulp & paper manufacturer
When we were working on HAN, we were approached by a Fibre, Pulp and Paper Manufacturer to investigate and explore on one of the by-products in our designs. It was the company’s vision to collaborate with the design industry to REUSE, RECYCLE AND RE-INTERPRET these wooden cores to create more awareness to the general public in their efforts to return back to the environment.
It would otherwise have been processed as wood chips, packaged and sold to other industries e.g. MDF Board Factories.
This is the PILOT Project to use these wooden cores to create the essence of the Restaurant Interior.
CONCEPT / CORE
The concept was to use a small element to create a greater whole.
The Acacia wooden core are (arranged) in various heights and quietly partition the space. Each wooden core varies from 40mm – 50mm and are around 2.6m height due to physical limitations of the Plywood Machine (1.2m x 2.4m)
The aim of the project is to display the materials in its truest and purest form –applied based on the existing physical limitation and condition of the material. For example, to accentuate the singularity of the willowy wooden cores, the connection of the wooden cores is discreet, allowing the physical characteristics of the wooden core to stand out.
SENSE OF PLACE
Purity of a Japanese Space.
Other than the wooden cores, the interior is a simple collage of materials which are minimally treated and manipulated. Materials are expressed modestly, with full appreciation of the ingenious integrity of the natural product and process.
Untreated Raw steel left to rust naturally. Untreated Arcacia Wooden Cores.
Burmese Teak with its natural edges expressed.
The multiple layering of these planes creates an austerity and intimacy to the users of this space with only the Copper Hood which provides a focal point to the whole restaurant.
"imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete” form of beauty – Wabi Sabi
Characteristics of the wabi-sabi aesthetic include asymmetry, asperity (roughness or irregularity), simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy and appreciation of the ingenuous integrity of natural objects and processes.
wabi may be interpreted as the imperfect quality of any object, due to inevitable limitations in design and construction/manufacture especially with respect to unpredictable or changing usage conditions; then
sabi could be interpreted as the aspect of imperfect reliability, or limited mortality of any object, hence
the phonological and etymological connection with the Japanese word sabi, to rust.
