On the coast of São Miguel in the Azores, an essential, accessible home deeply connected to its natural setting
Casa CR grew out of an unlikely coming together of experience and a desire to start over. The clients, a couple in their eighties, chose to build a new home as an act of faith in their future. Before the first design decision was made, this premise had shaped the entire project by SO Arquitetura & Design.
The site, on the south coast of São Miguel Island in the Azores, is rugged with basalt outcrops and vegetation scattered across its irregular topography. The house does not so much impose on the landscape as it settles lightly into it, bringing to mind an aircraft wing across the space. That image is not a formal affectation but a subtle architectural metaphor for the owner’s past role as an Air Force pilot during the Colonial War.

The residence occupies a single level designed for accessibility. The architecture is simple and essential. A reinforced concrete canopy extends over the glass façades, protecting the interior spaces and mediating the relationship between light, weather, and the landscape. The garden and the horizon become integral parts of the domestic space, with a pool in the background.
At the center of the house, an internal patio introduces a more intimate and cozy dimension, bringing tropical vegetation into the heart of the home, while providing natural light, cross ventilation, and a constant connection with the outdoors. This courtyard both anchors the plan and sets the rhythm of daily life.
Lined with wood, the interiors create a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere. A palette of natural materials balances the strength of concrete and basalt, further reinforcing the bond between architecture and the landscape. Views open outward from every point in the house, taking in the patio, the garden, and the natural setting.
Custom-built and designed with awareness, Casa CR is essential architecture that responds to the clients’ needs, combining everyday functionality with elegant design.
