CAAM Arquitectos has completed the renovation of a private residence in Mexico City to create Casa CDLA. The project preserves the building’s original identity while upgrading it for contemporary living.

Prioritizing light and openness, the project is a measured transformation that focuses on spatial quality and perception.

The first stage of the project involved preserving the original volume and the understated character of the facade. The design team’s reorganization of the interior layout centered on redesigning the entrance and staircase.

The staircase takes on a central role as both a functional and spatial element, connecting the levels with more fluidity and introducing a visual rhythm throughout the home.

The relationship between interior and exterior determines the organization of social spaces. Large windows and sliding panels dissolve the boundaries between the two, seamlessly extending the living room out onto the terrace and garden.

The kitchen, living area, and terrace form a connected sequence that serves as the home’s social core. These three spaces open onto one another to create a visual dialogue that reinforces the sense of openness. Veined marble, neutral tones, and metallic accents bring warmth and coherence to the interior, creating a serene, balanced atmosphere.

As a primary element of the design, the terrace typifies this connection between interior and exterior. The white pergola regulates natural light, its geometry tempering sunlight to create a shifting rhythm of shadows throughout the day.

The result is a livable threshold where the domestic and garden dimensions intertwine with no clear hierarchy to expand the perceived living area.

The material palette reinforces this overarching vision. Lime-plastered walls, natural wood millwork, and a palette of neutral tones – olive and warm earth – form environments defined by light and materials that will develop a patina over time.

The garden functions as an extension of the interior. Strategic sightlines and openings along internal corridors promote permeability, bringing air and greenery into the building to provide a sense of openness, including in the private areas.

In a transformation built on consistent material and programmatic choices that use light to redefine the space, Casa CDLA preserves its architectural heritage while making room for contemporary living.
