Vertical Panorama Pavilion
At Donum Estate in Sonoma, California, known for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, an innovative and colorful pavilion takes visitors on a multi-sensory journey. Designed by artist Olafur Eliasson and architect Sebastian Behmann of Studio Other Spaces, the Vertical Panorama Pavilion brings a new twist to the wine tasting experience, taking visitors on a panoramic journey guided by the pavilion’s enchanting presence. Wrapped in a kaleidoscopic roof of color, created using Eastman’s Vanceva Color PVB Interlayers, the striking design seamlessly blends art and architecture to create a captivating focal point in the landscape, reminiscent of a piece of jewelry. This architectural marvel, with a weather-resistant conical roof 14.5 m in diameter, features 832 laminated glass panels in 24 different transparent colors, each with VancevaTM PVB interlayers.
The Vanceva Interlayer Colors system works with a versatile palette of 16 basic colors, allowing for intricate combinations of up to four layers, resulting in a rich spectrum of color. For this project, the designers were inspired by the essential elements of weather, choosing a selection of greens, golds, reds, burgundies, purples and blues. Care was taken to create a perfect connection between the glass and the steel frame, using a custom aluminum frame and reinforcing structure. These elements hold the panels in place, avoiding any overlap to ensure that the individual colors remain distinct and to achieve the intended esthetic integrity.
The area under the glass canopy, adorned with colorful reflections, houses three circular sectors dug into the ground: a 13-sq. m entrance space, a 5-sq. m service area, and a 19-sq. m tasting area, from which visitors can enjoy views of the Sonoma Valley, San Pablo Bay and the Donum Collection.
