Live, Study, Share: Space for Everything
In the wake of Cambridge, Oxford, Dublin and many other European university cities, Milan now also has its own Aparto Student Giovenale, a residence for students that is close to Bocconi University with 600 places available in variously-sized rooms, flats and studio apartments. Developed by Hines Italy and designed by Carmody Groarke working with Calzoni Architetti, the residence not only fits in with the identity of place, but also thrives in this regeneration of the old La Rinascente warehouses. In many ways, the residence is a physical reflection of its mission: in the same vein as other international venues, the overarching goal is to bring out the talents of a new generation of students through an opportunity for daily engagement in many spheres, from books to an hour of sport together. Given this aim, the shared spaces take on particular importance, starting right from the open, green central courtyard and continuing with the gym and yoga room, cinema hall, study spaces, laundry and communal kitchens (the apartments and studios also have their own facilities). These have also been designed so they can be converted for monthly cultural and other events.
The entire project, from the furnishings to the architecture, focuses on the student dimension. In the modern world, this clearly also means meeting specific parameters for international building certification and on this front, Aparto Student Giovenale – built by Colombo Costruzioni – comes up trumps as it is the first Milanese student residence to achieve LEED Gold recognition.
Bandalux was involved in the development of all nine floors of the complex, providing a range of different blinds to meet the precise needs of each opening, depending on the degree of exposure to light and the required functionality to optimize internal comfort. The company supplied 700 blinds, in different fabrics. For the various living areas, the Premium Plus roller blinds are made of Polyscreen® 351, a high-tenacity, PVC-coated polyester that is very strong and flexible. Its differing degrees of openness and remarkable variety of transparency makes it ideal for tailored solutions, bolstering comfort and improving energy efficiency. It is both durable and flexible, solid in appearance, with no creases or wrinkles, and it does not warp.
The fabric helps cut energy costs, can be recycled and is very durable in external environments. The combination of these properties is why it is pre-accredited to add to a LEED certification score. For the bedrooms, the Bandalux Blackout collection was chosen for obvious reasons. The dual choice of fabrics is essential in ensuring every moment of the day can be enjoyed to the full.
