Integrating both architecture and landscape, the Crystal Bridges campus in Arkansas promotes a holistic approach to medicine
Founded by philanthropist Alice Walton, the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) offers a pioneering four-year medical degree. The school is located on the 54-hectare Crystal Bridges campus in Bentonville, Arkansas, which is also home to the Heartland Whole Health Institute and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
The building was designed by Polk Stanley Wilcox, while New York firm OSD – Office of Strategy + Design oversaw landscape design and a rooftop park.

Founded in 2021, AWSOM aims to overhaul medical education by promoting a holistic approach that centers on the whole person. Dubbed “whole health,” this philosophy takes every aspect of well-being into account – physical, mental, social, spiritual, and environmental.
This focus on the whole person is echoed in The Melancholic, Ugo Rondinone’s monumental stone, concrete, and steel sculpture near the school’s entrance.

A similar vision is reflected in broader strokes in the architecture. Project leader Wesley Walls describes the building as a “link between nature and community,” designed to “transcend traditional boundaries between art, architecture, nature, and wellness.” Even the location reflects this holistic view, with the lush campus grounds and its 8 km of trails receiving Arboretum accreditation. The site is also home to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the headquarters of the Heartland Whole Health Institute, an organization founded by Walton.

Drawing inspiration from the layered, rocky landscape of the Ozark Mountains, the structure features a dramatic front corner entrance crowned by extensive sloping glazing, a satin brass soffit, and precast concrete walls.
Massive two-story high steel trusses project over 24 m outward, giving the building a bold, soaring, yet visually light appearance. Over 740 m² of perforated brass sunshades shield the glazed façades, reducing solar heat gain without limiting natural light.

Inside, the four-story facility houses a library, simulation center, clinical skills center, an anatomy resource center with an anatomy lab, a makerspace, and various leisure and wellness areas.
Reflecting the holistic health approach, special attention was devoted to the landscape design, the work of OSD. Conceived as part of the Crystal Bridges campus trail network, the outdoor spaces are a functional and sensory extension of the teaching spaces. Scenic design elements that also embody the school’s principles, the green spaces, vegetable gardens, outdoor classrooms, forest trails, healing gardens, and the 8,000 m² rooftop park encourage social interaction, physical activity, and meditation.
The AWSOM project brings together architecture, landscape, and education to create a cohesive learning environment in which every space supports education and wellness. It resets the vision of schools in which caring for the individual extends to their surroundings.
