“Agnon” Comprehensive School - Netanya, Israel - Ammar – Curiel Architects
Located on the northern edge of the city overlooking Road No. 2, one of the main traffic routes in Israel, the “Agnon” Comprehensive School serves as an entrance sign to the city of Netanya.
The 11,000 sqm. of the school is divided into 16 buildings single or two story buildings, housing both a middle school and a high school. While the schools are separated, the public areas and joined facilities such as science labs, computer labs, multimedia rooms, art studios, gymnasia and cafeteria serves both.
Designing schools requires an understanding of the school’s position in the community and an understanding of the student's relation to the school. The school is the environment that unites young, society and the establishment. It is also a place where Children spend the majority of their time. The Pupils, teachers and principals all require a building that will serve as a home. Based on this realisation we defined the main tasks of planning:
Image – reshaping the school’s institutional image
Environment – the school will carry an independent and unique identity
Atmosphere – the school as a part of the interwoven fabric of life
The Education Village project enabled us to develop the notion of disarticulating the school structure. The school was designed as a village and Each class received its own “house”.
The entrance to the school is through the central piazza and the “houses” are positioned along the streets and alleys. Thus the school became a place.
The main issue we dealt with during the design process was our desire to replace the “hallway”. The hallway is what symbolizes the anonymous and an establishment. The modification of the layout by replacing the hallway with a network of open space streets and alleys is the basis for the idea of the Education Village.
The cooperation of educational figures and parents and the attention given to their comments helped us to restore the importance and centrality that society believes the school deserves in community life. The supportive reaction we received from students serves as proof that our goal was achieved – the school has returned to being a place of good memories of youth and adulthood.
