Located at the transition zone between commercial districts and upscale residential areas in Sanlin Bay, this project analyzes its urban context under regional planning and Shanghai-style architectural guidelines. Serving as a natural transitional hub where the bay area meets the city, our design strategy employs contemporary language across spatial, aesthetic, and lifestyle dimensions to create a new-era Shanghai-style neighborhood integrating nature, urbanity, and daily life.

"Continuity guides our design strategy for urban space. Building clusters of varying heights create a staggered skyline from the bay towards the city, while also framing multiple view corridors from the city to the bay, enabling seamless interaction. Under the unified Shanghai-style theme, the western-to-southeastern façade adapts and refines classic elements, achieving continuity to create an elegant, minimalist, modern streetscape that unifies the district while establishing a distinct identity. A green leisure axis traverses the site, linking the southern bay area to the northern urban park. Along this bay-city corridor, human-scale blocks and slow-traffic spaces are emphasized. Corner nodes link the bay and blocks, seamlessly interweaving urban fabric with landscape."
Building upon Shanghai's century-old heritage of Haipai architecture, this project reimagines a new Haipai aesthetic for the modern era. The spatial layout adopts the classic Haipai block approach—featuring cobblestone streets, dense road networks, small street corners, enclosed layouts, and semi-open spaces—to create a distinctive neighborhood characterized by intimate scale, open spaces, and a harmonious blend of tranquility and vibrant street life. Through diverse building enclosures and integrated urban functions, the setbacks at street corners form welcoming public spaces that nurture community interaction and provide warm, inviting areas for rest and gathering. Under a unified Haipai architectural style, the design distills and reinterprets classic elements, presenting an evolving urban streetscape that transitions from elegance to simplicity to modernity. The dynamic, undulating skyline adds rhythmic variation to the cityscape, enhancing its visual appeal. A thoughtful mix of materials—including stone, aluminum panels, terra-cotta tiles, and glass—paired with a curated color palette, ensures each block expresses its unique neo-Haipai identity. This approach infuses the architecture with warmth, moving beyond generic, lifeless designs to celebrate authentic local character.
Thoroughly analyzing site attributes, the design integrates urban functions within an enclosed layout. Natural setbacks at key corners introduce warm, inviting spaces. Corner nodes connect the bay area, blocks, and parks along public pedestrian axes, blending cityscape with landscape. Facades reinterpret classic elements, evolving from traditional to contemporary Shanghai-style elegance. This approach innovatively enriches urban space and vitality.
