The concept reinterprets traditional Warmian-Masurian barn typologies—a simple, gabled rectangular volume—into a refined holiday house. The brief was a dream task: zero quality compromises, meticulous detailing, and a clear aim to create the “ideal” family retreat. We distilled the form and palette to essentials, pairing logical planning with honest, durable materials to foreground calm, light, and nature.
Set among pines on land bordering Lake Kownatki in the famous Polish lake region Warmia, the house mediates between forest and water. Large, glazed openings and a generous terrace dissolve boundaries, enabling every ground‑floor room to open outdoors. Natural hues and textures—charred larch, pale metal, mineral concrete—blend with the site’s tones, while the compact barn form respects the local rural grain and views toward the surrounding greenery and nature.
Coated metal offered precision, durability, and restraint in form. The standing‑seam roof ensures long‑term weathering resistance and crisp lines, aluminum panels deliver a dimensionally stable, ventilated rainscreen which is easily maintained. Metal’s refined neutrality lets timber slats read warmly in contrast, achieving a controlled, elegant envelope suitable for coastal‑continental conditions.
A ventilated ACP rainscreen and standing‑seam roof improve envelope longevity and thermal performance. Durable, serviceable systems reduce life‑cycle impacts. Timber slats in charred Siberian larch extend service life without heavy coatings. Ample daylighting cuts artificial lighting demand. Compact form and careful detailing minimize thermal bridges. The project forms part of a larger, landscape‑led plan preserving extensive green areas.
Kownatki Lake House is a quietly rigorous show home that sets the architectural DNA for a 120‑unit luxury lakeside resort. Each house in the development comes with a wooded plot of at least 1,200 m², ensuring privacy and a generous private outdoor space. A simple, gabled, rectangular volume of houses’ design recalls local barns, refined through disciplined proportion and detailing. The envelope combines a ventilated composite aluminum façade (ACP) with charred Siberian larch slats, aluminum windows, and a standing‑seam metal roof. Between-window ACP panels complete a precise, low‑maintenance shell. Inside, a double‑height living space with fireplace anchors family life, flanked by bedrooms including a master suite; sculptural central stairs lead to a mezzanine for work or play. Materials—ash wood and architectural concrete—provide tactile warmth and robustness. Strengths include: a clear, functional plan; seamless indoor‑outdoor flow from every ground‑floor room; a restrained palette that harmonizes with pine forest and lake; and a high‑quality, durable envelope that balances metal’s precision with timber’s texture. The show house embodies the project’s ethos: logical, functional, and beautiful architecture that elevates holiday living while respecting place.
