The project is located in the old factory area of Nanjing No. 2 Machine Tool Works, a site that carries the legacy of Nanjing's modern industrialization. Targeting mass consumers, Ma Hongxing's Chuan Xiaoguan, a Sichuan cuisine brand, draws on the collective memory of the site and its customer base, introducing the "industrial marketplace" concept. The design focused on three key principles: "low-carbon, sustainable renovation," "preserving industrial heritage," and "creating a marketplace-like ambience." These guiding concepts culminate in a one-of-a-kind dining environment.

The project is nestled in a vibrant park renovated from heritage industrial buildings, merging seamlessly with its surroundings. As crafting this restaurant, the design team retained the framework of an existing factory building while reimagining its facades, to preserve industrial heritage and align with the brand's operational vision. A steel-frame glass curtain wall at the corner draws in street views, while the red brick facades smoothly link with neighboring buildings, preserving industrial aesthetics while integrating into urban life. The interior features a grand full-height atrium and a distinctive spatial layout, creating an immersive atmosphere that echoes with its surrounding environment, representing a fusion of history and modernity in the context of urban regeneration.
The design team consistently prioritizes sustainability, advocating for the long-term eco-friendly use of space. Through various projects, they explore the sustainable use of materials, functionality, and ecology. To honor the site’s historical context, this project adopted an adaptive reuse strategy, preserving the main structure and steel truss roof of the old factory. Some building materials were recycled and reused: the red bricks from the demolished exterior walls were reused in the new construction of the interior walls and facades; the wooden materials in the space also came from recycled old timber, realizing sustainable material circulation.
The architectural transformation retains the original structure and materials, merging the old with the new by reusing red bricks and juxtaposing steel with existing industrial traces. The space centers around an atrium, drawing inspiration from traditional architectural prototypes of "hall" and "room," creating a unique spatial circulation and dining experience. Weathering steel forms the primary structure, adding a timeless patina that resonates with the industrial heritage. The steel staircase is designed as a sculptural feature, suspended by tension rods that soften the visual weight of the metal. Private dining rooms are separated by wood panels and metal grilles, offering varied levels of privacy and engaging with the "hall" and "room" concepts. The furniture, primarily wooden, introduces warmth to the industrial space and create a balance between the old and the new. Furniture pieces in the atrium take inspiration from traditional eight-immortals tables (square tables for eight people), evoking a sense of intimacy and conviviality akin to a family a gathering. Based on the core concept of "preserving the old, and creating the new," the project seamlessly blends historical and contemporary elements, thereby establishing a dialogue between the past and present. The reimagined space offers a distinctive experience that celebrates both industrial heritage and the vibrancy of modern urban life.
The designers' professionalism and attention to detail are exceptional. We are incredibly proud of this remarkable project. They've managed to preserve the old factory's memory while introducing innovative design features. The unique layout of the "hall" and "room" is fresh and unique, and the use of recycled materials is sustainable and also cost-effective. This distinctive design style has attracted many customers, and we look forward to future collaborations!
