The entrepreneur demonstrated commitment in several respects. He wanted to develop a multifunctional complex in Vienna's northern urban area, Seestadt Aspern. In doing so, he did not shy away from using a forward-looking building concept. The 2226® principle developed by Baumschlager Eberle Architekten and its partner 2226® GmbH met the requirements. Buildings constructed according to this principle do not require any short-lived technology for heating, cooling and ventilation. Instead, they use a long-lasting concept that combines architecture, high storage mass and the software 2226® Operating System to control energy flows. Heat is provided by people and appliances, cooling is controlled by the software. Comfortable temperatures between 22 and 26 degrees all year round are the result.

The houses line the street

The 2226 ROBIN Seestadt building complex has given the urban expansion area a new centre in the neighbourhood. Precise spatial transitions make the overall block structure transparent. The layout of the ensemble is designed for accessibility - open to the urban space, closed to the main traffic routes. Three buildings with office space, restaurants and a private university were built on the approximately 3,600 square metre site. Formally, the structures are coordinated with the urban development: a row of pillars connects the two buildings to the wide street, behind which trees are planted. This creates a spatial continuum of façades, accompanied by the surprise effect of the row of pillars leading into the greenery of the trees. A hermetic seclusion was deliberately relativised.

The corners guide the flow of space

The application of the 2226® principle brought about a paradigm shift in Seestadt Aspern: instead of conventional construction methods and air conditioning, the principle of ‘hardware meets software’ applies here. The conditions for a comfortable indoor climate are created by an intelligent mix of high storage mass (material quality), cleverly proportioned architecture (light incidence) and efficient control of energy flows with the help of the 2226® operating system. The advantages of this concept are obvious. Energy consumption, construction costs and life cycle costs are significantly reduced. The intention of the 2226® principle, in contrast to conventional building methods, is to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions with less technology.

Plasticity shapes architecture.

Authenticity, expression and appropriateness – these parameters for architectural beauty also apply to the 2226 ROBIN Seestadt project. The buildings do not require composite thermal insulation systems, which is both visible and, above all, noticeable. The high plasticity of the three buildings arises directly from the building construction, without the need for additional applications. The architecture is elementary, emphasising that buildings first and foremost stand and thus endure. This impression is complemented or relativised by the dynamism of the building forms. This interaction between the structures creates a flow of space that is significant in the neighbourhood. The project offers both proximity and expanse, i.e. changes that are perceived positively by people.

2226 ROBIN Seestadt is the perfect office for small and medium-sized enterprises as well as institutions with a sustainable mindset and a focus on future-oriented products and services. No CO2 emissions from heating or cooling, as well as well-being through natural fresh air circulation, are the special features of the ensemble, which, with its usage-neutral spaces, makes changes in the future possible today.
