As the hotel's main target group is millennials, the concept should fit their lifestyle and represent Osaka, a city that values humor and has an outgoing spirit. The concept of "Hack Osaka" was born from an idea of the guest profiles assumed, "the alteration of existing concepts, a mixture of new ideas, and rewriting of the conventional system.” By transforming Osaka culture in a clean, modern and humorous way, the idea was to express the "new Osaka lifestyle" created by Canopy, a brand with a "neighborhood" (connection with the local community).

The site is located in Umeda, an area of Osaka that is always bustling with people and is surrounded by many commercial facilities. In the center of the area, a facility called "Grand Green Osaka" has been established with a lush green and open park. This hotel is located on the north side of the park. It is a place that symbolizes the "new Osaka" with a view of the wide sky and a walk through the greenery, something that has never existed in this area before. The wide windows provide a dynamic view of the park below, the city of Umeda beyond, and the Yodo River, Osaka's symbolic river.
Through the combined management of cogeneration systems and district heating and cooling not only in this hotel district, but throughout the entire Grand Green development, it is possible to link with external energy sources and maintain energy independence during emergencies. The overall goal for Grand Green Osaka is to achieve a 35-percent reduction in CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to the carbon absorption of 9,700 hectares of forest (about 2,100 times the area of Umekita Park). This is the first mixed-use development in Japan, including urban parks, to achieve LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED ND) Gold certification (plan certification) and SITES (Landscape) Gold certification (pre-certification).
Canopy by Hilton is a lifestyle brand rooted in the concept of “neighborhood” and grounded in the local area. It features designs and services that exploit the distinct qualities of the surroundings. The design concept is “HACK Osaka.” HACK is the alteration of existing concepts, a mixture of new ideas, and rewriting of the conventional system. Through the Canopy brand's filter, the goal was to create a hotel representing a new Osaka by constructing a space that humorously HACKs Osaka's local identity and culture. The hotel public area was envisioned to be seamlessly connected, producing a space where not only guests but diverse people, can come together and enjoy different scenes that all unfold simultaneously. Various furniture, artwork, and playful elements such as seesaws and smart ball games are arranged to bring people closer together and create opportunities to engage with the neighborhood. The guest rooms have "canopies" installed over the beds with graphic representations of Hideyoshi's gourd-shaped battle standard. A playful mini-bar designed to resemble a retro refrigerator and a creatively HACKed Fukusuke doll are among the design features that highlight Osaka's history and unique humor. A mix of various HACKed art and design elements recreates Osaka’s distinctly energetic and eclectic culture.
Our goal was to achieve a total design for the hotel that celebrates the space not only through its well-crafted interior but also through the diverse interactions it fosters with guests. To this end, we aimed to create an atmosphere that expresses Osaka’s local character, to stimulate conversation among guests, and to pursue functionality and comfort. We believe that the guests will perceive these ideas as they use the hotel in various ways and will discover something new in the experience.
