Alila’s first urban resort hotel in Greater China is set to debut in Shanghai downtown. This is the third hotel we designed for Alila since we started collaborating with the brand in 2010. The biggest challenge we had to face was to integrate the new hotel into the bustling context of the metropolis, different from the picturesque landscapes of the other natural sites. A serene “Urban Peach Blossom Shangri-La” amongst the skyscrapers is what we expect Alila Shanghai to be for everyone.

The venue is located at the intersection of Weihai Road and Shimen Yi Road, close to Zhang Yuan and just one road from Taikoo Hui. The hotel's entrance is hidden behind the building, to make guests stroll through the greenway from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. As the path of entry is lengthened, with the gradual transition of light from bright to dimly lit, they finally get to the secluded spot through the winding path, enabling their minds to be relieved and their thoughts calmed down.
The organic garden on the 5th-floor terrace demonstrates Alila’s aim, to promote sustainable living. Some ingredients and spices used in the restaurant are grown in the garden, and guests can harvest them to enjoy a unique eating experience from “farm to table”. You can also overlook the entire inner courtyard and the rooftop of the Zhang Yuan from the indoor heated pool by looking through the organic garden. In addition, the Alila’s special spa and fitness area allow you to obtain inner peace and release negative energy. With the use of different materials and spatial relationships, and connecting art, a link between nature and the conference system on the 3rd floor is naturally formed.
Upon reaching the 4th floor, an inward garden disrupts the high-rise rhythm, transforming the rooftop terrace to create an urban resort experience. Incorporating principles of traditional Chinese gardens in a modern context, the space offers a psychological experience, encouraging visitors to explore different spaces, scales, and perspectives, all harmonized by the architecture. The floor plan revolves around function and scale, with four “boxes” of varying sizes surrounding the courtyard. Each box, covered in dark colours, creates a quiet atmosphere, leading the eye toward the light of the courtyard. The Secret Roof offers expansive views towards Zhang Yuan’s Shikumen architecture, with the corridor creating intimate yet distant spatial transitions, guiding exploration of both inner and outer spaces. The hotel integrates two systems: one focused on organic combinations in the public areas, and another highlighting symmetry and rhythm in the Tea Banquet, Library, and restaurant. These spaces, separated by continuous screen doors, create layered structures, where fluid elements like light and air form distinct atmospheres. The guest room is more serene and restrained, rustic, and goes beyond time. The warm tone is predominant here, thus infusing serenity into the space where the wood will slowly age with time. In addition, we are also responding to the city by using different elements. The warmth of traditional craftsmanship and art piece combines well with each other in here.
We have integrated the narrative of oriental art, the diversity of Shanghai culture, and Alila’s unique philosophy of development in this project. We hope this presentation can truly unite Alila with Shanghai to release Alila’s new vitality and energy in the city, and allow it to become a tranquil oasis amid the chaos of the bustling high-rises with peace and tranquility.
