Founded in 2019 by philanthropist Alice Walton, the Heartland Whole Health Institute emerged from a desire to transform U.S. healthcare by addressing the whole person—physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. The concept was shaped by research revealing high national healthcare spending with poor outcomes, prompting a shift toward prevention and value-based care. The design team, led by Marlon Blackwell Architects, responded to Walton’s vision by rejecting conventional “boxes” and instead designing a curvilinear, nature-inspired structure rooted in Ozark topography, creating a space that fosters wellness through connection to place, light, and flow.

The Heartland Whole Health Institute is intimately attuned to the Ozark landscape, with its curvilinear architecture and native materials echoing the forested bluffs, karst formations, and layered geological rhythms of the region. The building doesn’t sit on the land—it flows with it—honoring the terrain with stone and brass elements that mirror tree trunks and sedimentary textures. Nestled within the Crystal Bridges campus, it enriches Bentonville’s evolving wellness and cultural corridor, linking art, nature, and health. Trails, gardens, and public spaces invite immersive engagement, making the project a living extension of its surroundings and a holistic reflection of its Whole Health mission.
The Heartland Whole Health Institute incorporates sustainability through regionally sourced materials, passive design, and smart systems. Native stone from Oklahoma and Arkansas reflects Ozark geology and reduces transportation emissions. Weathered brass fins minimize solar gain; local woods and Venetian plaster enhance acoustics and indoor air quality. Breezeways and curvilinear forms enable natural ventilation. The WebCTRL® building automation system manages HVAC, lighting, and energy, optimizing performance with fault detection and remote access. Native landscaping promotes biodiversity and deepens the building’s connection to place and ecological well-being.
The Heartland Whole Health Institute is a transformative architectural and wellness initiative located on the Crystal Bridges campus in Bentonville, Arkansas. Designed by Marlon Blackwell Architects, the 85,000-square-foot building embodies a holistic approach to health, integrating art, nature, and education. Its curvilinear forms and native stone base reflect the Ozark forest and karst topography, creating a structure that flows with the land rather than imposing upon it. The dogtrot-style entry welcomes the public into a space that includes art exhibitions, wellness programs, and community events. Upper levels house offices for WHI and Art Bridges, with open workstations and acoustically tuned, light-filled interiors unified by warm wood ceilings. Sustainability is embedded throughout: locally sourced materials, passive ventilation, and advanced building systems support ecological compatibility. The building’s openness, natural textures, and immersive landscape connections foster a sense of calm and vitality. As a landmark of wellness architecture, it redefines how built environments can nurture the whole person—physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially—while honoring regional identity and craftsmanship.
Founder Alice Walton shared, “The spaces around us matter. They impact our daily lives and our health and wellness.” President Claude Pirtle added, “We’re inspired by Marlon Blackwell Architects’ welcoming design and look forward to providing a new destination for visitors on Crystal Bridges Campus.” Their remarks reflect a deep commitment to creating a space that fosters healing, connection, and community through thoughtful architecture.
