The project involves the demolition and reconstruction of the lower secondary school in Atri (TE), with a modern building on three levels (two above ground and one semi-basement), built with a mixed structure of reinforced concrete and XLAM. It will accommodate 9 classes for 225 students, multifunctional spaces, special classrooms, and accessible, safe environments. The entrance has been strategically positioned to ensure student safety. The flat roof will host photovoltaic systems. The design emphasizes flexibility, sustainability, and harmony with the historical context.

The project integrates harmoniously into the urban and landscape context, preserving existing tree species and respecting historical and environmental constraints. The recessed position of the main entrance, large glazed surfaces, the use of low-impact materials and colors, and the external layout with accessible pathways and green areas all contribute to a respectful and functional integration into the urban fabric. The project enhances continuity with existing public spaces, promoting safety, usability, and environmental quality.

prospetto

The project pays particular attention to environmental sustainability through the use of XLAM structures for the above-ground levels, ensuring high energy performance and low environmental impact. The flat roof houses a photovoltaic system for energy self-production. All spaces are designed to maximize natural lighting and ventilation, thereby reducing energy demand. Controlled mechanical ventilation systems are provided where necessary, along with a rainwater harvesting system. The selected materials — including thermal break aluminum window frames and interior plasterboard cladding — contribute to comfort, efficiency, and durability.

The project for the new lower secondary school in Atri is the result of a careful integration of functional requirements, environmental sustainability, architectural quality, and contextual sensitivity. The building is developed on three levels—two above ground and one semi-basement—and is designed to accommodate 9 classrooms, special-purpose spaces, reading areas, staff rooms, and multifunctional environments. The use of XLAM for the above-ground structure and reinforced concrete for the underground level ensures high energy performance, durability, and low environmental impact. Key sustainable strategies include a rooftop photovoltaic system, natural and mechanical ventilation, and rainwater harvesting. The internal layout promotes spatial flexibility and quality, moving beyond traditional corridor-based organization in favor of dynamic, integrated environments. Special attention has been paid to accessibility, safety during student entry and exit, and harmonious integration with the urban and landscape context, preserving existing trees and complying with heritage and environmental constraints. The project delivers an innovative, welcoming, and sustainable school, capable of meeting contemporary educational and social needs.

Officina Tecnica is an engineering company founded in 2022 by four young professionals, each with a different specialization, who have decided to combine all their extensive experiences gained over the years both nationally and internationally. The multidisciplinary approach allows us to address the project in all its aspects: from discussions with the client to the concept, from architectural design to material selection, from project engineering to the care of every single detail, leading to the realization of the work. Officina Tecnica shapes its design research based on a thorough analysis of the evolution and changes in contemporary life that, in turn, result in new spatial, functional, and temporal requirements.
