The idea was rooted in a respect for the site's dramatic landscape and cultural context. Inspired by the misty mountains and tea fields of Maskeliya, the concept was developed as a quiet architectural response that adapts to the steep terrain and microclimate. Through careful observation and integration of local materials and knowledge, the design evolved into a retreat that supports ecological balance and honors the character of the place.

The residence is shaped by the surrounding natural environment. It follows the site’s steep contours and retains existing tea terraces, allowing the landscape to lead the design. Positioned above a reservoir and waterfall, it captures broad views while protecting from prevailing winds. The use of natural materials and regional building practices helps the house merge with its setting, creating a harmonious relationship between structure and site.
Sustainability is central to this project. It uses locally sourced stone, recycled timber and woven elements to lower environmental impact while celebrating local craft. Passive cooling is achieved through cross ventilation, solar shading and thermal mass. Renewable energy systems such as rooftop solar panels and rainwater harvesting support off-grid living. Native plants are used to restore biodiversity. These strategies ensure minimal disruption to the site and long term environmental resilience.
We envisioned a home that would respect the land rather than reshape it. Moray Falls complements stunning landscape extremely well. A quiet, off-grid retreat that blends into the hillside, uses natural materials, and lives in harmony with its surroundings. It’s a place rooted in simplicity, sustainability, and the spirit of Sri Lanka’s highlands.
