Community Gymnasium, a new landmark for Bergamo, Italy

The Gymnasium project was developed in two directions: on one side, the creation of an iconic and recognizable building within the urban context; on the other, the realization of a functional and welcoming space, strongly demanded by the community and suitable for both sports associations and neighborhood residents. The concept is based on the idea of a building that stands out, an urban icon emerging through fluid and dynamic forms that evoke movement and energy – essential values tied to sports. Simultaneously, the goal was to create an inviting and functional environment, where every architectural element contributes to a seamless spatial experience, addressing the needs of a constantly evolving city.

The project is located in the San Tomaso de’ Calvi neighborhood (Bergamo), within an urban regeneration context that also involves the adjacent park, creating a continuum of public spaces promoting social interaction. The building serves as a community landmark, not only for its sports function but also as a catalyst for urban energy. The choice of materials and colors reflects a dialogue with the surroundings, balancing the innovation of the structure with respect for the natural context. While contemporary, the building's form harmonizes with the environment, enhancing the landscape and establishing the sports complex as a cohesive element between architecture and territory.

The character of the main volume is highlighted by the blue Zintek® zinc-titanium cladding, chosen for its strength and durability. This material gives the building a dramatic presence, changing with iridescent reflections that vary with the angle of natural light, giving the complex a strong and evolving identity. The Zintek panels were installed with regular spacing using angled seams, and horizontal joints designed for continuity and precision. Despite the envelope's geometric complexity, the material adapted perfectly to the main façade's curvature, turning the joint design into an elegant architectural detail, enhancing the surface's plasticity and rhythm.

The gymnasium was designed to integrate harmoniously with the surrounding park, using natural and recyclable materials, favoring local suppliers. The wood used is PEFC-certified, ensuring it comes from responsibly managed forests, thereby reducing the environmental impact. The use of prefabricated components, along with efficient site management, optimized construction times, minimized material waste, and enhanced overall project efficiency. Innovative solutions, such as the natural ventilation system and efficient rainwater management, further demonstrate the project's commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.

The building's façade stands out as a distinctive element. The Mediterranean blue Zintek® zinc-titanium cladding ensures durability and resistance while giving the structure a dynamic identity, with reflections that interact with natural light, transforming the perception of the space throughout the day. The integration of the gymnasium into the southern park influenced many design choices, particularly the strong connection between the interior and exterior. This relationship is especially evident on the east façade, featuring a large curvilinear opening that allows spectators and players to maintain visual contact with the surrounding landscape while remaining within the structure. The sports facility includes a regulation-size court for basketball and volleyball, with dedicated spaces for athletes and referees, along with bleachers for 99 spectators and a hall with a refreshment and café area designed to encourage moments of conviviality. The entirely timber-based structure was not merely a technical decision but a deliberate hallmark of the project. The exposed glulam trusses become an integral part of the design, bringing rhythm to the interiors and defining the space with their presence. Natural light filtering through the glass windows enhances the texture of the wood and expands the spatial perception. Completing this material harmony, the light sports parquet reinforces the sense of fluidity and coherence between the elements
