"Like water through a river" — SIGMA founder Kazuto Yamaki describes the seamless, interconnected production process of their cameras and lenses in the Aizu factory. The space design reflects this flow, aiming to create an environment as pure as water, blending a secluded garden with the bustling city.

The space is divided into three zones: "Ben (The Ways of Being)," "Zao (The Ways of Crafting)," and "Gan (The Ways of Seeing)," each representing brand culture, craftsmanship, and artistic creation. This design mirrors SIGMA's commitment to smooth, efficient production, with all components made in Japan, ensuring consistent quality.

Echoing the brand's philosophy, "Beyond the technology, is Art," the space represents SIGMA's pursuit of both innovation and artistry.

The SIGMA space, located in Shanghai's Shang Sheng Xin Suo community, exemplifies urban renewal, transforming the area into a vibrant cultural hub. Situated beside a fern garden, the building’s northern gallery connects seamlessly with the landscape, creating an organic dialogue between architecture and nature. The multi-entry design optimizes accessibility: the southern entrance caters to visitors, the eastern one serves the gallery, and the northern exit links to the garden. Differentiated entrances respond to diverse uses, strengthening the building's connection with the community. The landscape, with unique vegetation on each facade, fosters an interactive visual framework between the space and its surroundings, enhancing both the urban and ecological experience.

The northern facade of the SIGMA space features an exterior shading system that ensures privacy for the gallery while maintaining natural light. The adjustable shading components balance light levels and privacy, protecting exhibits from direct sunlight. The system is optimized based on Shanghai’s solar trajectory data, dynamically responding to seasonal and time-of-day sunlight changes. Pre-fabricated assembly techniques were used for quick construction, reflecting an integrated approach to industrial design and building. Inside, the Kvadrat Acoustics system on the gallery walls combines function, form, and acoustics, providing a seamless, quiet environment that aligns with the brand's precision and craftsmanship values, reflecting the concept of "Zao" (the ways of crafting).

The most functional area in the entrance reception is the product repair room. Through transparent glass, customers can clearly see the repair process as engineers work, fostering face-to-face communication and closer interaction between SIGMA and its customers. The walls of the repair room are made of drawers that organize parts based on the technician's needs, reflecting the meticulous care given to each product and component at the Aizu factory. Leaving the repair area, visitors encounter a lens wall stretching from floor to ceiling, displaying various product generations. Designed with a triangular column system, the wall showcases lenses from SIGMA’s main product lines—Contemporary, Art, Sports, and CineLenses. Beneath the wall, a circular island table, made of weathered limestone, stands as a symbol of time, embodying the passage of history, and inviting visitors to pause and reflect.

The CEO of SIGMA China stated: "The exhibition space’s textures and colors, like the reception area, create a harmonious atmosphere, with brown carpets adding warmth. While not part of SIGMA’s standard palette, the innovative use of these colors in the Shanghai showroom reflects deeper thought: avoiding conventional black, white, and gray helps foster a closer connection with customers, enhancing hospitality and making visitors feel warm and comfortable."

Bio

ONOAA STUDIO, an architectural and interior design firm, was established in 2019 by Gao Ya and Chen Peng in Shanghai. The studio’s projects span commercial spaces, architectural renovations, offices, private residences, retail environments, showrooms, cultural venues, objects, and various creative possibilities.

Committed to balancing creative ideas with practical solutions, studio imbues spaces with unique design philosophies and experiences. ONOAA not only has the capability to solve inherent challenges but also addresses new problems arising from innovative ideas. By integrating spatial experiments with reality, we aim to find solutions through meticulous control and ongoing coordination of the design process.

We believe that creativity is not solely about producing novel items; reimagining familiar objects as unknown territories for redevelopment is equally creative. Ultimately, the creation of space is the essence of our craft.
