The idea for the project stemmed from a desire to design two architectural structures that bring people closer to nature through direct sensory experience. The concept was developed around three natural elements—water, air, and light—and integrated into two wooden buildings with specific roles. The pavilion was envisioned as a multifunctional space with a covered terrace facing the pond and connecting directly to the children’s playground. The tower was shaped as a vertical sculpture that offers panoramic views and invites playful activity through the throwing of paper planes. Both concepts reflect the theme of playful learning and connection to the landscape.

The pavilion and the tower are subtly integrated into the rural landscape of the Poljanska Valley. They follow the natural topography and avoid dominating the environment. The pavilion lies next to a stream and opens toward the pond, creating a tranquil space under a tree. Its terrace connects with a children’s playground, creating a continuous social and recreational flow. The observation tower leans towards the valley, echoing the surrounding hills and directing attention outward. Both buildings are constructed from timber and designed to complement the natural textures and rhythms of the location, reinforcing a strong bond with the surrounding rural setting.
Sustainability was a key aspect of the project. Both structures use locally sourced timber, which reduces the environmental footprint and supports local forestry. The design prioritizes passive strategies: orientation, natural ventilation, and minimal ground intervention. The woven timber façade of the pavilion draws inspiration from “Pletež”, a traditional local basket-weaving technique, which adds cultural value and reduces the need for industrial cladding. Foundations are minimized, and no mechanical systems are used. The project has not yet received official certifications, but its approach promotes low-impact building practices and reaffirms the value of local materials and crafts in contemporary architecture.
The project consists of two wooden structures—a pavilion and an observation tower—set within a nature park in the Poljanska Valley. Both buildings serve as tools for interpreting natural elements and offer a playful, sensory architectural experience.
The pavilion is conceived as a folded wooden form—part sculpture, part shelter. It is positioned by a stream and includes a covered terrace oriented toward a nearby pond. This terrace functions as a social space, directly connected to a children's playground, making it ideal for family visits, events, or casual gathering. The pavilion also serves as a flexible venue for educational workshops, such as traditional local craft making or art workshops, further connecting visitors to the region’s heritage. Its façade is wrapped in a lattice of woven wooden slats, inspired by Pletež, the local craft of basket weaving, giving it a natural, breathable skin that resonates with tradition.
The tower is a vertical, sculptural volume that slightly tilts toward the valley. It features a viewing platform at the top, designed for wide open views and playful activities like throwing paper planes. Hidden at the base is a Camera obscura, offering a quiet, magical experience of light.
Both buildings are made from timber, respecting the landscape and minimizing ecological impact. Their playful character, cultural grounding, and formal clarity make them strong anchors within the park.
The pavilion and tower offer more than shelter or function—they invite curiosity, rest, play, and reflection. Their form and materiality speak softly to the land, while referencing local tradition. Through simplicity, interaction, and craft, the project brings visitors closer to nature and each other in a meaningful, enduring way.
