The project aims to express the brand identity, to create an added value for team and visitors, to upgrade the site perception, to traduce the perfection quest of this renowned company and to deliver a high-performance building. Two new interlinked volumes are created. The higher one, inspired by the old lighthouses guiding ships in the Dornoch Firth, emphasizes a vivid modernity. Its 20 meters height overhangs the whole site. Its transparent and cubic volume acts as a symbol. This tower welcomes the 2 biggest stills of Scotland. and a laboratory for creating and tasting located on the highest level. The Lighthouse conception erased industrial, technical or infrastructural semiology, in order to arise a kinetic and vibrant architectural envelope. A lower building completes the project.

General view

The project takes place in a distillery founded in 1843 in Tain, Scotland. In this inspiring place just between sea and earth, the Distillers keep their secrets for generations. This unique industrial and intangible heritage as well as this remarkable location have both inspired the architectural conception.
The Lighthouse’s glazed envelope was imagined to reflect the Highlands changing sky all day long, capturing its shades and brightness, in harmony with the outstanding landscape. Its laboratory take advantage of the natural scenery offering stunning views over the North Sea to create an inspiring experience. The lower building was made with reused stones coming from an on-site demolition. As for slate and pavement, they originate from local quarries situated near the distillery.

General view

The project stands out for its circular economy. The environmental footprint of this industrial construction has been drastically reduced thanks to a global system of reuse. From the reuse of stones from an in situ demolition, to the supply of biogas from the distillation process, and the wood cladding from old oak barrels behind the glazed facade: The two new buildings pay tribute to ancestral know-how and reveal the innovative character of the brand. Moreover, due to the distillery’s isolated geographical localisation, the conservation area and the ethical environmental approach, all the construction material supply chain and its sources have been limited (slate and pavement come from local quarries). This extension was finalist of 2023 Grand Prix AFEX.

General view

The Glenmorangie Distillery located in northern Scotland, near the city of Tain, is a cornerstone in the Highlands’ history and heritage. Barthélémy Griño delivered two industrial buildings in 2024, symbols of the brand renewal and its ambitious development strategy. The project aimed to revitalise the image of the site which holds some unique craft skills, express the quest for perfection of this renowned company and provide the distillery with a modern and high-performance building.
Halfway between tradition and modernity, the two volumes created take their place within the almost two-hundred-year-old distillery. The higher one, inspired by the old lighthouses guiding ships in the Dornoch Firth, emphasizes a vivid modernity. Its 20 meters height overhangs the whole site. Moreover, its transparent and cubic volume act as a symbol. This iconic tower welcomes two monumental stills, and a laboratory for creating and tasting on the highest level. A lower building completes the facility, subtly merged with the existing warehouses.
The care taken with details of the Lighthouse construction, conceived as an inspiring and high-technology laboratory, echoes and pays tribute to this lands’ exceptional savoir-faire, becoming the symbol of a Scottish whisky company looking towards the future.

General view
“The Lighthouse distillery is a shining beacon on the Highland coastline. Like an actual lighthouse, the towering 20m-high glass stillhouse can be seen for miles around. The Lighthouse’s design is dramatically different from the traditional stone buildings of the main Distillery, established more than 175 years ago. Yet it reflects the single malt’s creativity through and through – even down to the fragments of whisky casks embedded in its walls.”
