The Borelli castle restoration project introduces a completely new and innovative element to the system: the collective and public nature of the access space. Drawing inspiration from the deep historical roots of the “Ligurian village,” the project suggests the creation of a plaza as a new focal point for the functions introduced. After years of neglect and decay, Borelli castle abandons its ancient role as a private space, isolated within the solitude of its walls and embodying the eclectic architectural tastes of a prominent historical figure. So now it became a new public space. For this reason, the project incorporates a mix of uses designed to offer the right balance between public life (openness, social interaction, cultural events) and private needs (privacy, daily life).
Votazioni chiuse
Castello Borelli with Mount Piccaro behind it covers a property of 400,000 square meters that extends from the sea to the top of the mountain. The area plays a significant role from a landscape point of view, both for its position in the territorial area and for the beauty of the botanical park. The history of the places has its roots in the Roman age up to the construction of the Borelli castle at the end of the 19th century. The project seeks a constant dialogue between ancient and past, with a decomposition of volumes on a technological backdrop in stave and glass in antithesis to the crenellated walls and towers of the castle. The new building observes the sea and blends into the greenery, hides between the walls and reveals itself to the observer who reaches and enters the complex.
The Project was set up on the principles of environmental sustainability in the use of natural and recyclable materials, in the use of energy production technologies (solar panels) and control of natural light in the apartments with a sliding slatted fifth, in the strong attention to the study of greenery. The park plays a strategic role in the redevelopment project of the entire complex: the size and presence of important types of trees transform the recovery intervention into a significant objective not only at a municipal level but even at a regional level.
The history of Castello Borelli tells of a secluded place, more devoted to meditation than to social life. Yet, citizens have always loved Capo Santo Spirito and its castle, as shown by the many historical postcards. The project’s challenge was to transform the relationship between an architecture closed to the outside and a community eager to reclaim that space. This led to the idea of redevelopment: an Italian-style square, inspired by Camillo Sitte and the morphology of ancient towns, with a public building, a civic space, and surrounding residences.
The new square is defined as follows:
The entire complex is immersed in the Monte Piccaro park, which has been restored both in its vegetation and in the historical paths that cross it up to the top of the promontory.
Castello Borelli is not just a castle. It is a privileged location, perched above the sea and immersed in the greenery of the Piccaro Park. It is a resort rich in exclusive services, designed as an oasis of personal well-being. The company aimed to turn the restoration of Castello Borelli into an opportunity to create a unique space, allowing the citizens of Borghetto to (re)discover Capo Santo Spirito and experience life in an extraordinary place. The project turned our vision into reality.
