LONG, a home shaped by memory and desire in Longiano (Italy)

The design idea stems from the deep desire of a family of art collectors to transform an abandoned ruin into a place that reflects their identity and vision of contemporary living.
In Longiano, one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, her cosmopolitan energy as a New Yorker blends with his deeply rooted Italian sensibility, creating a home where past and present merge in harmony.
The concept revolves around the idea that art should be a living part of everyday life.
On this principle, the house was conceived as a “blank canvas” where art, family, and nature meet: a “sheet of white resin” that wraps floors, walls, and ceilings, enhances natural light, and serves as a neutral backdrop for furnishings and contemporary artworks.

The project respectfully integrates into the historic fabric of Longiano, preserving the identity of the place and enhancing its authentic character.
The restoration of the ruin maintained the original layout, reinterpreting it through a contemporary language that dialogues with the context without imitating it.
The intervention establishes a balance between memory and innovation, where materials, proportions, and compositional choices harmoniously relate to the landscape and urban surroundings without altering their essence.
The openings frame views of the sea and countryside, transforming the uniqueness of the setting—a hill overlooking the sea, immersed in the tranquility of the countryside and protected by the walls of one of Italy’s most beautiful villages—into an architectural element.

The project is based on a fundamental sustainability strategy: the restoration of an abandoned ruin. This approach avoids consuming new land, significantly reducing the environmental impact compared to new construction. Restoration is central to the project and represents an eco-friendly choice that combines respect for the historic context with an environmentally conscious vision.
Moreover, we believe that aesthetic quality itself is a form of sustainability: creating beautiful places means designing spaces that are appreciated, lived in, and more likely to be preserved over time. This helps reduce demolitions or complete replacements, promoting a durable and respectful approach to both the environment and the existing heritage.

In Longiano, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, a couple of art collectors transformed an abandoned ruin into a second home for their family. Set in a unique context where the tranquility of the countryside blends with the charm of the historic village, the house is conceived as a space for regeneration.
The project is based on the idea of a blank canvas: a single continuous layer of white resin wraps floors, walls, and ceilings, amplifying natural light and creating a backdrop for the contents, whether furniture or works of art.
Custom-made furnishings were designed as vibrant color accents, almost all featuring colored mirror surfaces, turning them into genuine design elements.

This house is like a blank canvas where art, family, and nature meet.

The house develops over two floors and consists of four distinct volumes, two per floor. The ground floor is dedicated to the living area, conceived as an open space ideal for hosting family and friends. Upstairs is the sleeping area, where the daughter’s room is designed to be versatile thanks to a gathered curtain.
Today, this home is a place where past and present merge in harmonious balance. It is a living environment, capable of evolving with the family that inhabits it. Every corner tells a story: the story of a shared vision, of art that does not merely decorate but becomes an integral part of daily life.

This home was born from a meeting between memory and desire. Our emotional connection to the place and the wish to create a unique space for our family guided us. We wanted a refuge that was small but precious, where every detail spoke of us. The transformation of the ruin shows that, with sensitivity and creativity, it is possible to create spaces that not only preserve the past but also evoke emotion and endure over time.
