Velenje is a rapidly growing town in the Šalek Valley. The town centre on the Paka River dates back to the medieval period, but the city experienced significant growth during the 1950s and 1960s with industrialisation and planned urbanisation. The idea for Stanetova House stemmed from the unique topography of the plot and the client’s wish for a private yet open family home. The concept was developed around a central external staircase that divides the house into two parts, allowing for functional zoning and multiple access points. Emphasis was placed on views, outdoor living, and a strong connection between architecture and landscape.

Stanetova House - exterior

Stanetova House is situated on the northern edge of Velenje, where the urban fabric begins to dissolve into the landscape. The house is partially embedded into the slope, following the natural topography. Its orientation opens the interior spaces toward the south, offering panoramic views of the Velenje basin while ensuring privacy from the street above. The roof, treated as a walkable surface and public-like platform, acts as an extension of the road and offers a soft transition between house and town. The design blends built form with natural surroundings rather than dominating them.

Access to the house is possible from two sides: through the garden or via the roof and the external staircase. The main entrance leads through a large covered terrace on the ground floor, where the living areas, the master bedroom with bathroom and storage rooms are located. On the upper floor, one part houses the children's bedrooms and a bathroom, while the other part is used as an office. These rooms are connected by two internal staircases and the office can also be accessed from the landing of the external staircase. The house is connected by a spacious garden with an embedded garage on the south side. The roof of the residential building is composed of two parts - the roof of the building itself and the roof of the covered terrace or loggia. The walkable roof acts as an extension of the street space creating a square, a meeting point with a view of the surroundings. The roof provides parking for guests and also allows access to the house via the external staircase. The Stanetova house is characterised by a clear, elegant and thoughtful design that allows for outdoor living thanks to the large covered terrace and, despite its openness, ensures sufficient privacy for its residents.

As clients, we were looking for a home that blends comfort, privacy, and a strong connection to the outdoors. The architects understood our needs perfectly and created a house that feels both open and protected. We especially appreciate the large covered terrace, the thoughtful separation of spaces for work and family life, and how naturally the building fits into the sloping terrain. It’s a home that truly reflects the way we live.

Bio

Enota was founded in 1998 with the ambition to create contemporary and critical architectural practice of an open type based on collective approach to development of architectural and urban solutions. Constant changes and new complex situations in the world around us drive us to think about new architectural and urban solutions. In order to be able to produce answers to those new questions we believe it’s time to surpass the boundaries of conventional discipline set mainly by our cultural backgrounds. Enota’s team of architects focuses on research driven design of the environment where study of contemporary social organizations and use of new technologies are interwoven to produce innovative and effective solutions. Enota’s solutions are strongly influenced by research, reinterpretation and development of social, organizational and design algorithms that derive from nature. The result is always a strong binding of the buildings with the environment that surrounds them.
