DEP HOUSE: A HILLSIDE HOME

207 architettura ingegneria

The project was born from the client’s desire to relocate to a scenic hillside area in a small town near Lecco. The architectural concept stemmed from the intention to live in a plce with strong identity preserving its character and historical features without compromising its essence. The project takes shape from an old building retaining a portion of the original structure of the first span. To preserve the pre-existing urban volume the design unfolds through an interplay of forms: on the ground floor the original building volume was emptied to create an entrance porch while the extracted volume was shifted to the first floor resulting in a striking geometric element that defines and characterizes the space. Natural materials were selected to ensure seamless integration into landscape.

DEP HOUSE

The building is situated in a mixed urban context positioned between built and natural landscape. The old demolished structure stood apart from the surrounding residential context due to its distinct construction typology. Yet, over time, it became an integral part of the landscape. The project seeks to evoke its presence by creating a transitional element between residential and artisanal zones and as a passage towards the natural environment. The design recalls the pre-existing volume enriching it with a distinctive geometric feature. A newly designed skin crafted from natural materials enhances the building’s warmth, making it inviting for its residential function while ensuring seamless integration into landscape.

DEP HOUSE

The project is developed using active and passive strategies for sustainability and comfort.
The building envelope is insulated and highly massive. The southwest-facing geometries and movable shading systems optimize winter solar gains, enhanced by thermal mass of the flooring, while ensuring summer overheating protection.
Northeast-oriented glazed openings provide natural light and ventilation.
Indoor comfort is achieved through a ventilation system and plants for CO2 absorption.
Electricity consumption is covered by photovoltaic system, while garden irrigation is supported by rainwater harvesting.
The project incorporates the reuse of existing materials: facade blocks for outdoor paving and iron frames for interior doors.
The project aims to certification under CasaClima and Biosafe protocols.

DEP HOUSE

The project aims to preserve the strong identity of the pre-existing building by reinterpreting its defining characteristics while introducing new elements. The introduced upper-level volume stands as an addition to the original structure defining the residential function and reinforcing the connection with the surrounding environment: from the balconies new vistas open toward lake and mountains enhancing the relationship between architecture and landscape. The project involves the demolition of the pre-existing building while retaining a single structural span on the southern façade. This approach allows for the creation of a high-quality building without land consumption. Several materials from the decommissioned building are repurposed: concrete blocks from the walls are reused as permeable paving for parking and walkways, while some window frames are adapted as interior doors. The reinterpretation of historical features, such as double-height spaces, shed windows and iron frames, is complemented by new materials inspired by nature. The façade is designed with terracotta tiles while the new volume, the porch and some windows details are clad in cork.

DEP HOUSE
Dep House offers a contemporary reinterpretation of spaces and volumes that once embodied a slower, human-centered way of living where work seamlessly intertwined with daily life. It embraces sustainability in an effortless and context-sensitive manner, thoughtfully attuned to the site's inherent potential.
