The Social Hub Florence Belfiore: An Urban Ecosystem in the Heart of Florence

Rizoma Architetture

The concept stems from the idea of designing a complex, hybrid, flexible, and open space—capable of welcoming a diverse community of people, including students, travelers, professionals, and local citizens—and offering them opportunities for connection, work, learning, wellbeing, and social interaction.
Rizoma Architetture’s approach is grounded in the principle of Design for People, with a focus on human experience, the relationship between individuals and space, and the integration of functions, languages, and materials.
The concept was developed through a continuous dialogue between architecture, interior design, landscape, and strategic vision, unfolding into fluid, multifunctional, and accessible environments that nurture a broad sense of community.
From the very beginning, the project was conceived as a living, inclusive, phygital organism in constant evolution.

The Social Hub Firenze Belfiore stands on a former industrial site in the San Jacopino district, just steps away from the future high-speed train station and the tramway connection to the airport. The project is set within an urban context undergoing profound transformation, and becomes a driving force in redefining the identity of the area through an inclusive and permeable architectural approach.
The ground floor is conceived as a continuous, walkable space—visually and physically connected to the city—thanks to large windows, inner courtyards, and public pathways.
The rooftop park, spanning over 7,000 square meters and open to the public, emerges as a suspended urban landscape where nature, architecture, and the Florentine skyline come into dialogue. It offers a new perspective on the city while contributing to the environmental and social wellbeing of the neighborhood.

Yes, sustainability is one of the cornerstones of the project. The Social Hub Firenze Belfiore has achieved a BREEAM “Very Good” certification and incorporates a range of strategies aligned with ESG principles, including:

  • use of recycled materials and natural finishes
  • durable furnishings designed for long life cycles
  • selection of low-water-demand plant species for the rooftop park
  • corporate goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 78% by 2030
  • on-site generation of 50% of the building’s energy needs
  • circular waste management practices

In the interior design, special attention was given to the sustainability of materials, environmental quality of the spaces, and the connection between humans and nature.
The project has also received significant recognition from both the international design press and the wider design community.

Lobby

The project is defined by a deeply hybrid and relational spirit, where hospitality, co-living, coworking, education, dining, and events coexist within a single, fluid and coherent ecosystem.
On the fourth floor, a remarkable rooftop park of over 7,000 square meters—the largest and most articulated of its kind in Italy—opens up to the city as a public green lung, offering Florence a regenerative and inclusive urban space. Every environment has been conceived through a human-centered approach, placing daily experience, social interaction, and wellbeing at the heart of the project. The material and visual identity is in dialogue with the local context, through the calibrated use of authentic and durable materials such as marble, terracotta, and reclaimed stone—elements that reflect the history and culture of the area. At ground level, the spatial layout eliminates rigid barriers, creating a multifunctional, walkable, and welcoming continuum. Finally, the social dimension is present in every detail: not just a hotel, but a true urban hub—open, active, and capable of generating new connections and becoming a driver of community.

The Social Hub Firenze Belfiore represents, for Rizoma Architetture, a tangible vision of how interior design can serve as a driver of urban, social, and cultural transformation. It is not merely about designing beautiful or functional spaces, but about creating the right conditions for exchange, cross-pollination, and shared wellbeing. In a historical moment that demands vision, empathy, and adaptability, this project demonstrates that beauty can also be a form of social infrastructure.
