The 19th Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou. The project is the largest baseball and softball sports center in China with the highest standards and the most advanced facilities. The project is divided into two sites, A and E. Site A includes a main baseball stadium with a maximum of 10,000 seats, a second baseball field with a maximum of 2,500 seats, a training gymnasium and a hotel. Site E includes a 2,000-seat main softball field and a 500-seat second softball field. The design draws inspiration from the artistic conception of Shaoxing water towns, and extracts elements from traditional cultural symbols such as ribbons, scrolls, and tile roofs, and applies them to the facade design, showing a unique concept that fits the region and arouses the public's memory of local culture.
We believe that the value of stadium buildings should not be limited to the establishment of a static public space for specific users, but should emphasize flexible public service spaces to adapt to the social development of the digital age. Different from the traditional independent venues, our design comprehensively considers the feasibility of the two-stage operation and management during and after the Asian Games, cleverly opened the space inside the venue, organically connected with the surrounding communities, and also responded to the theme spirit of "Heart-to-Heart, @Future " of the Hangzhou Asian Games. As a sports and cultural park, it is open to the public. People can enter it at any time and experience all the facilities.
The top surface is covered with a titanium dioxide-coated PTFE membrane with a total area of 21,000m2. Each unit undulates in the middle, looks like the ripples on the water surface when the breeze blows from a distance. The bottom surface of the ceiling is covered with curved white perforated aluminum plates, which can penetrate the natural light during the daytime and present a brilliant LED lighting effect at night, providing an excellent viewing experience for the audience during the game. The curvature of the ceiling is simulated by rain and sunlight movement to achieve the best drainage and shading effect. The slender steel columns are mostly used for structural support, but there are also some hidden pipes for drainage, making the whole space cleaner and purer.
A single-function stadium has very high construction budget. If the functional conversion cannot be completed after completion, the stadium will be idle, which is detrimental for later operation and management. Therefore, the design have comprehensively considered the feasibility of the operation and management of the Asian Games during and after the game. Due to the variability of space design, the functional conversion of the venue after the game will be quickly realized, thereby minimizing the cost recovery time and realizing the profitability of the venue as soon as possible. The design hopes to break the stereotype that sports buildings are relatively closed in the course of social development, and fully consider the multiple possibilities in the urban context.
The Hangzhou Asian Games Baseball and Softball Sports Cultural Center was designed by UAD. The architectural design scheme fully responded to the Design Brief, and demonstrated creativity. It has created a reasonable layout, complete programs, clear circulations, and allows for easy use. After completion, the project has won wide recognition from various sectors of the society.
UAD was established in 1953. Formerly known as Zhejiang University Architectural Design Studio, it is one of the earliest First Class Design Institutes among major national universities. The mission of UAD is to seek "harmonious environment, global vision, design-teaching-research integration and innovation, and the highest professionalism". UAD adopts the development strategy of "high-grade culture, broad vision, high-efficiency management, high-caliber talents, high professional technologies and high-quality works", with the academic theory of "Balanced Architecture" as the design guideline. During the past decades, UAD has always persisted in creating fine and innovative works, contributing a large number of outstanding works in various fields. Over the years, it has won more than 1,500 awards for outstanding designs, excellent projects or research outcomes at national, ministerial and provincial levels.
