The design idea was born with the desire to give Palazzo Sistema a new image that embodies the two souls of the place: the assertive verticality of the contemporary office city and the welcoming horizontality of the traditional “railing house”. These two aspects also reflect the administrative/management character but with high attention to the environment and the landscape, citizen and Institutions. 4 cornerstones:

  • The relationship with the context and the Milanese neighbourhood
  • Architectural conception according to solar exposure
  • The inclusion of the landscape and natural elements
  • The usability and public function of the building

The iconic aspects of Palazzo Sistema are the same ones that make it dialogue with the context. More compact and vertical elevations towards the contemporary city and soft lines towards the residential districts . These two faces are then connected to each other thanks to two pedestrian underpasses which open up the continuous front on the ground floor and allow complete permeability of the lot. On the more domestic front, the building reinterprets the railing house with curved lines and successions of terraces that allow the greenery to climb up the building itself.

The hypothesized project solutions and the information known in this tender phase, a pre-positioning with respect to the LEED protocol was elaborated, which allows for the affirmation of a score of 88 points and the PLATINUM level certification. The goal is to create a building that 3/3 meets and exceeds the minimum requirements set by the energy saving legislation to become a NZEB building. The external shape and internal layouts were coordinated to maximize the passive functioning of the building. Specially designed device for this purpose is the solar chimney in the southern corner of the lot. Natural lighting was a central design criterion for defining the shape with the aim of favoring non-incident light for all permanent workspaces.

The New Palazzo Lombardia is configured as a building with an iconic image, in which the following qualifying points are systemised: · The insertion of a new pedestrian axis which, through the new park, connects via Pola to Viale Nazario Sauro · The careful study of the elevations where the relationship between the compactness of the street front and the naturalness of the elevations overlooking the park is differentiated. · Use of greenery in its various forms: green roofs, internal courtyards, vertical greenery, rain gardens. · The solar chimney and the shape resulting from a careful study of the shadows. · The reference to the principles of biophilic design , according to which the integration of greenery into architecture helps to improve the health and psychophysical well-being of the people who live and work in these spaces. · The centrality of man and psychophysical well-being, through spaces that encourage socialization and cooperation, the presented design proposal declines these spaces both inside and outside the building together with the use of greenery.

The flexibility of the spaces with the location in the building of different types of meeting rooms, conference rooms and training rooms allows them to be used by all users without creating isolated areas, far from common services.

In the 60s the first skyscrapers overlooked Milan but as designers of the 21st century it is our job to always try to look beyond. For this reason, in the frenetic world we are living in, even the workplace can no longer be conceived as an aseptic shell of metal and glass but, rather, it too must try to integrate in an almost natural way helped by innovative construction techniques and plant engineering.
