This case is about a super kindergarten in a densely populated tropical city in southern China. We propose the design concept of "Terraced campus, Bonsai landscape" with the aim of maximizing (semi) outdoor spaces to create a green campus where children can participate in outdoor activities throughout the day. The building meets the extraordinary functional space requirements and presents a child-friendly scale with its terraced layout. By incorporating a stepped volume design, the building seamlessly integrates with the site, providing 13,250 square meters of indoor and semi-outdoor spaces within a 6,396 square meter site. It offers 6,430 square meters of outdoor activity areas, exceeding the planned requirement of 2.5 square meters per child.
Serving as a void in the urban space, the campus acts as a landscape patch for the block. The terraced architectural volumes effectively mitigate the large-scale building mass within the limited site, alleviating spatial constraints on the western and southern sides of the block and creating a striking image at the interface with the secondary road on the northern side. The elevated plaza on the northern side harmonizes with the urban landscape and existing trees. The western side gracefully retreats from the street, improving the previously passive pedestrian space. The integrated design of the rooftop garden transforms the campus into a charming "Terraced campus, Bonsai landscape" in the high-density city.
The overall layout of the campus buildings follows a south-to-north gradient, with linear volumes arranged around courtyards oriented in the north-south direction. This arrangement allows the dominant southeast winds to enter indoor spaces through buffer areas such as rooftop gardens and courtyard clusters. Multi-level terraced gardens act as buffers against typhoon impact and facilitate rainwater collection while absorbing urban noise. The building design incorporates multiple concave and convex features and porous spaces. Non-energy-consuming outdoor and semi-outdoor public spaces are maximized, while energy consumption in enclosed spaces is controlled. We achieve the green and economic aspects of the building through modular construction, local materials, and minimal decoration.
Maximizing all-weather (semi) outdoor activities for children: By incorporating a stepped volume design, the building seamlessly integrates with the site, providing 13,250 square meters of indoor and semi-outdoor spaces within a 6,396 square meter site. Additionally, it offers 6,430 square meters of outdoor activity areas, exceeding the planned requirement of 2.5 square meters per child. When the weather is suitable, children can explore the garden with branching pathways, experiencing an open urban spatial environment. During hot and rainy seasons, they can play freely in the elevated plaza surrounded by trees. The campus as a landscape patch in the urban block: Serving as a void in the urban space, the campus also acts as a landscape patch for the block.
