The idea for the Hong Kong Palace Museum came from the objective of creating a world-class museum that showcases treasures on loan from the Beijing Palace Museum and other important cultural institutions. The architects curated the project to bring Chinese heritage to modern audiences, reinterpreting ancient Chinese spatial concepts through a contemporary architectural lens. The design of the museum takes shape as a stack of three atria, referencing Hong Kong’s dense and compact urban fabric, and based on the concept of spatial exploration through sequential courtyards in the Beijing Palace. The design caters to the functional needs of a modern museum in the context of Hong Kong while embodying the unique spatial experience of sequential courts in the imperial palace in Beijing.

The Hong Kong Palace Museum blends traditional aesthetics and contemporary architecture, drawing inspiration from Chinese art, architecture, and Hong Kong's urban environment. Through modern storytelling, it encourages visitors to contemplate historical works of art and objects, bringing traditional Chinese culture into modern life. The museum aims to connect Chinese culture with a global audience through strategic partnerships, traveling exhibitions, research, and training programs. It serves as a catalyst for creativity and promotes international cooperation while respecting the surrounding urban landscape.

The HKPM museum was designed under a comprehensive sustainability framework, achieving a BEAM Plus Platinum Rating certified by HKGB.

The design effectively utilizes space with a wide top and compact base. The sloping east and west facades open up the Museum Plaza, providing a gathering space for art and cultural activities. Eco-friendly features like energy conservation and sound absorption are incorporated into the façade, as well as sustainable systems such as reduced solar heat gain and increased greenery.

The HKPM has received several awards, including Honorable Mention in the Autodesk Hong Kong BIM Awards 2021, Winner of the Fortune Best Designs 2022, and the Gold Award for Best Infrastructure, Community & Civic Building at the MIPIM Asia Awards 2022.

As a world-class institution, the Hong Kong Palace Museum is at heart a cultural resource that belongs to the community of Hong Kong. As a dynamic platform, it aims to inspire community engagement, foster partnerships, and promote creativity. More than an assemblage of treasures, it will serve a collection of intimate and informative stories about the people, objects, places and experiences that make up the rich history of China. The architects at Rocco Design Associates curate the project to bring Chinese heritage to modern audiences, reinterpreting ancient Chinese spatial concepts through a contemporary architectural lens. Based on the concept of spatial exploration through sequential courtyards in the Beijing Palace, the museum takes shape as a stack of three atria which references Hong Kong’s dense and compact urban fabric. The Museum’s entrance pavilion frames the plaza, recalling the gates of the Forbidden City. An undulating bronze ceiling articulates the space, referencing the gold Beijing Palace roofs, unfolding to accompany a circulation spine that extends the full height of the building, enhancing vertical connectivity and bringing natural light down from above.

"Since the opening of the Hong Kong Palace Museum in July 2022, it has become an iconic cultural landmark in Hong Kong and a platform to facilitate dialogue among world cultures and civilisations. Rocco’s design resonates with both the Forbidden City and contemporary architectural language, presenting the Museum culture through details and capturing the imagination of visitors. More importantly, it creates an exceptional cultural atmosphere through public spaces, which enhances interactions".

Curriculum

Rocco Design Architects is a Chinese architectural practice based in Hong Kong. Working in a region with disparate cultural and physical landscapes, and where values from diverging times and places converge, Rocco Design’s work is grounded in the belief that architecture is the embodiment of culture – embracing and reinterpreting the past, as well as addressing modernity – and the requirements of contemporary living.

Rocco Design’s works are marked by their sensitivity and sensibility. While always eager to explore and innovate, they are nonetheless aware that architecture, rather than just an art, is ultimately the art of problem-solving
