Singh Residence, creating a real indoor/outdoor experience

Though this project has yet to be completed, in the future, it will be situated on 3+ acres in Upper Brookeville, NY.

As we work, we are seeking a variance to allow the new two-story residence to have a roof pitch of 0:12 rather than the minimum required 6:12 pitch. This is to say 100% flat roof area rather than the maximum permitted amount of 20%.

The design of this residence was influenced by the owner’s requirement to accommodate 3 generations of the same family. The key feature is a large indoor multi-functional space that is surrounded by wings which contain the private spaces. This 2-story central living, dining, entry and lounge space visually expands itself to the sound beyond and a private sculpture garden, which creates a real indoor/outdoor experience.

This continuity of indoor to outdoor is also reinforced by using the same materials inside and out. Visible from the sky, are the landscaped roof tops and ground level landscapes which blend into a homogeneous whole.

The residence is clad with a rain screen of slim porcelain panels. The entry and surfaces surrounding the inside courtyard are clad in Zinc. All the roofs are surfaced with green materials and are accessible and usable as outdoor terraces.

The house incorporates many sustainable systems, such as: geothermal heating and cooling (fossil fuel is only used for cooking); Photovoltaic panels; LED lighting; water harvesting/reclamation; super insulation, with the entire house being foamed; steel frame, with no wood being used; adaptive reuse; no maintenance materials such as the porcelain and zinc; and LEED accreditation.

The home showcases an indoor /outdoor pool area, with retractable doors for use in the warm weather seasons; an indoor squash/multi court; golf simulator/theater room; two kitchens (one for cooking Indian food that isolates the spice odors); 7 full bedroom suites; billiard room, family room and a 5 car garage.

Much of this project can be viewed through various sketches, drawn by founding principal of Narofsky Architecture, Stu Narofsky FAIA (both digital and not).
